Yesterday when I went out into the backyard with the dogs this seemed to really upset a squirrel in one of our trees. The squirrel proceeded to yell down at the dogs, occasionally jumping from branch to branch then pausing to yell at them from a new angle. This went on long enough for me to run into the house and grab my phone so I could get some video footage.

I have never seen such a bold and angry squirrel. This critter was fearless. To get the full effect be sure to have sound on.

Don't dogs just love to chase and bark at these squirrels. I put out sunflower seeds for the birds, and occasionally a red squirrel will be at the feeder. My dogs, especially Coal, keep a keen lookout for the furry critters. I think the squirrels like to tease, too, knowing that our dogs are not...ah....arboreal. Your dogs are precious, Nik. And, besides, you are a well-known member. That's cool. 100.jpg

We have a squirrel that does the same thing to Lettie. It’s drives her insane! It’s like it’s teasing her. Our yard is not nearly as pretty as yours though, love it!

Squirrel's are so funny. I enjoy watching them. It's cool how they like playing w dogs, and taunting them. Better never slip up and fall out of that tree!

I agree w Jarena, beautiful yard!

Squirrels are hyperactive buttholes. I've raised more than my share and they're just jerks, lol. Demanding little jerks. They do fall, unfortunately. The first baby I raised on my own was from the tree in the front yard. Mama fell and broke her back on a rock at the base of the tree. I had thought all the babies were gone so I put mama in the trash before something could get to her. I came back out to find one small baby climbing up the outside of the trash can to get to her. Saddest thing ever. My parents raised one that had his back legs paralyzed from a fall. He was still hyper. Cheeky little bastards.

Nik, just wait until it starts throwing things at the dogs. We had one at our first house that would chitter and throw acorns at my kids and dogs when they sat under the tree. It was so funny. Sometimes painful. I also agree that your yard is lovely.

Jake doesn't really bother with the squirrels, but my mom has a Norwich Terrier who doesn't bark at them, but she will sit at the base of the tree and quack like a duck at them.

That is so sad about the baby squirrel. I'm glad you were able to help it even if they are little jerks. I still have a soft spot for squirrels. lol

I can't believe they threw acorns at the kids and dogs! This little squirrel seemed angry enough to do the same but he did not throw anything down at us. I guess the california squirrels are just more mellow. I had never seen an angry squirrel before. In fact, as a child I used to hand feed them in the park. My ex freaked out the first time we were out on a walk and I saw a squirrel and started chirping at it til it ran to me. Sean appreciates that I can call critters to me. It doesn't scare him one bit. But, then again he is a major animal lover also. <3

So I have a question that's sort of off topic. What color are the squirrels where you live? I grew up in southeast Iowa and we only had red squirrels. The first time I came to visit my husband, then boyfriend, in Calumet City, IL I was flabbergasted to see that they only had grey squirrels. Most of the squirrels in my area of NW Indiana are grey with an occasional red oddball. My daughter is in Indianapolis and hers are red.

Here in Southeast Louisiana we have grey, brown, red, and black. I like the black the best. You don't see them as often, so when you see one you really notice it.

Once sitting at the dining room table having a bowl of Cheerios, a red squirrel munching down some sunflower seeds I put out for the birdies, looked straight at me and moved his lips. It looked like he was saying, "I love you." In the dead of winter, he was probably glad to have something to eat. But I seriously doubt that he was talking to me. When I told my 7th grade students about this, the rumor flew around school that professor Woods talked to squirrels. That is not at all true. Ok everyone??

To me most of the squirrels I have seen in Ca and in Oregon have looked brown. In CA we occasionally would see the black squirrels as well. Doing a quick google search I can see that some of the squirrels I think of as brown are actually grey. They other big variation I notice among squirrels is ear shape and size. The squirrels we have locally are smaller curved ears but when traveling I see a lot of them with longer pointier ears.

I talk to squirrels and birds and dogs and cats. lol Sometimes I even talk to plants. My husband sometimes teasingly calls me Snow White.

Here in NW Pennsylvania we have lots of red squirrels, a smaller variety of the critters. The gray squirrels are common, and the black squirrels, a sort of oddball coloration of the standard gray squirrel, are around, too. We always get a few. And I don't know of any teachers who talk to any of the squirrels. Picture is an old country road a stone's throw from my home. A family of squirrels lives nearby. Old Country Road 333.jpg

I love the picture. It looks like a place I would love to visit. My mom's family originated in Pennsylvania (several generations ago) but I have sadly never been. It has to join my wish list of places to visit. :)

Here in the city we have grey and black squirrels, the black ones are the ones that sit on the neighbors shed and stare in our dining room window, my husband swears it's giving him the evil eye and going to come get him in his sleep. We do have red ones in the mountains and the cutest chipmunks in the mountains.

Here we have all the colours for squirrels. I've chattered right back at them when they're being buttwholes and throwing walnuts at the dogs. Nick it's great that you have critters coming up to you.... that just shows the kind heart and soul you have and animals know it. I have raccoons, squirrels birds and deer that walk right up to me.... my husband has stopped freaking out... after being together for 26 Yeats he just gives up..lol ... My daughter teases me too calling me Cinderella... I say I wish... if I was I could whistle and the critters would help clean the place!

Nick thanks for sharing your video... it gave me a chuckle.... Bella not so much...she was trying to find the squirrel in my iPad :p

Boxergirl it doesn't surprise me that you have raised squirrels. You have an soft spot for nature, as most of us here do. :D I just wish there was a lot more caring people out there like yourself, and would show it too

Thanks for thinking I have a nice yard, Jarena. I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion, but anyway, thanks. Joyce and I looked and looked for a place to build. We found a 100 x 100 foot lot right here in town that used to be a garden. I promised the owner that we would not have drug parties and the such here if he sold it to us. And so....some years ago, we built this home and live here; some folks call our town the Lilly of the Valley...towns here in NW PA are all near rivers because of the former logging industry that was dominate at the turn of the century. Now...well, people retire here and the such, but no more logging like the old days. Have a great day, everyone.

Hey Sheila.....my doggies have no soft spot for the squirrels. Sometime I'll share about Coal chasing a big black squirrel through the snow which was too deep for the squirrel to make a lot of progress. Coal nearly had him. I stood on the back deck hollering, "Run, squirrel, run!!" I suppose the neighbors thought I lost my mind. Squirrels and those cute "chippies" cause me dogs to have much window time searching the property for any movement of these....ah.....rodents. Say hello to Canada for me ! dog journey.jpg
