"Spaying or Breeding?"

"Spaying or Breeding?"

"Are you spaying her or breeding?" My vet asked me this question when I took my then 5 month old female Cane Corso to the vet at the beginning of October. I told her neither, that I prefer my dogs natural. Yes, I have to deal with the menstrual cycle and blood, but that's a small price to pay for keeping my dogs the way they were intended to be.

My personal opinion, I think neutering is wrong. In my eyes, it's unnatural and disturbing. No, just because you don't neuter your dog doesn't mean it's going to run away and start a massive dog over-population epidemic. Don't blame people who don't fix their dogs for the problems that irresponsible breeders have caused. Plus, I know a better, safer, less destructive alternative procedure to fixing the over-population problem, it's a thing called a fence. Have a big, strong dog? Get a big, strong fence.

I also believe that neutering is destructive to temperment and instinct. No, I do not want a dog constantly humping my leg, but instead of a quick fix, I'd spend the time to train the dog, rather than take the easy way out. Honestly, how would you feel if your sexuality was stripped from you?

Also on a side note, my cat (interestingly, my friend's cat as well) became morbidly obese after his neutering, and he went from an agile, curious, outgoing cat to a lazy, fat, moody cat who has problems trusting anything that breathes.

So anyways, that's my opinion. Let me hear yours.

Lol, your not alone. Many of the members here feel the same way, with the exception of one of my dogs all have been and will be "natural" unless a medical situation occurs. I believe the "scare tactic" for "whole" dogs are bull.

Glad to know.

Honestly, who would want to take away from a dog breed as beautiful and majestic as this?

And here's my humble CC.

In Addition...

There is also no scientific evidence to back up that neutering increases lifespan / makes your dog more healthy, and in fact, has done the complete opposite in most cases. How can the removal of gentilia possibly be more healthy for dogs, or any animal in that matter? As I've read on an earlier thread, laws don't protect us and our companions, they regulate us.

I think neutering has it's place. Not everyone is as savvy as "we" are. Some people actually put the onus on the dog, and I thnk as a general preventative, it's not a bad thing.

For me, I intend to have females. I will NOT breed, but after having experienced my mothers' pug getting pyo, I think I would rather prevent. Once my bitch is about 2 I would seriously consider spaying at that point.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion and choice as long as they are acting responsibly and not letting their dogs roam etc.... I personally have left my male dogs in the past intact. And I guarantee neither ever had the opportunity to impregnate a bitch. The two I have now are both "fixed". Both were done before I became their owners. I may have chosen it for the female just simply because the headache of being in heat might have drove me bonkers but I wouldn't have done it at such a young age. LOL Hell, I was spayed and I survived. :p

I am with you, although I do fully believe that S/N does have its time and place. Most of the average dog owners can not responsibly handle an intact dog, either it being a female or a male. If ever I decide to get one of my dogs altered in the future it will not be a S/N it will be a vasectomy or ovary sparing spray. Panzer will not be altered.

And I know a few neutered males who will still hump the leg off of you. :p

Re: "Spaying or Breeding?"

My dogs are always in a controlled environment when free, and they are supervised when off their leash in public places. However, I keep an especially close eye on them when they are in heat, and I do not leave them outside alone at this time, even in the backyard, just as a precaution. And I think that, unless the dog is damaged in the genitalia area of the body (or any other genitalia-related problems), there's not a necessity in neutering/spaying. I would not have a dog's genitalia altered or removed if they are perfectly healthy and normal. Also, heavily depending on the time you fix your dog, it can have physical (infection) and psychological (distemperment) risks that I personally would never take.

I agree, it has its place. I do not plan on neutering mine as of now.

But, I can tell you that I neutered both my male cats, they both are athletic and trim, years later. I would never have an unaltered cat.

Beaux is not fixed, and I do not plan on fixing him unless something drastic changes. He is 20 months old, does not hump, is not overly agressive, and does not have free roam of the neighborhood so there is no worry about him accidentally bredding. My vet is very open minded and well read and we have gone over the health pros/cons numerous times., and nothing seems defenitive. To each their own.

I'm new to this forum so I don't exactly know where certain thread subjects should go, but I found the general section to be a suitable place to put it. But thanks for letting me know.

I have two males who will never be neutured unless medically necessary (21 month EM, 5 month Great Dane) but I have a a female (EM 23 months) that just got spayed for several reasons: I really, really don't want to deal with the heats forever AND it is very difficult to consider not doing it with two intact males. When I get my next one, it will be a male who will no be neutured.

I guess that's understandable, what with having a male and a female near constant access to one another, assuming they're not siblings. Although, personally I would take a different route if I was in your situation, such as disallowing them to have any contact with eachother when the female is in heat.

Also, it is a bit of work cleaning blood and not a fun task, but I guess I'd rather do a bit of extra honest work cleaning up after them instead of altering. I'd neuter as a last resort.

Naw it has nothing to do with that, Im pretty sure you can put wherever you want it. Some people may have some different "views" though so it may be moved to the heated debate section..

Im with you though. I say leave those bad boys attached unless they absolutely have to be removed
