I switched my 11 month old mastiff to solid gold from purina one because she wasn't gaining weight, and now after a month and half on solid gold she still isnt gaining weight and still has runny waste. She is currently weighing 80 lbs everyone tells me she should be weighing about 110 by now. anyone have any advice or know if she is under weight for her age this is our first mastiff.

Has she been to the vet for the diarrhea?

There could be a number of things wrong with her

She could have worms or other intestinal parasites or thyroids problems

Yes we took her to the vet and he checked for worms and parasites and said she was clear. I'm thinking of taking her to a different vet because ours said it was just probally the food but he pushes for the purina one food cause thats what he sells. whats the average weight for a 11 month old female mastiff? Her parents aren't giant mastiffs the male is around 170 and the female is around 150 so i dont expect her to be one of these 200 lb mastiff but i still feel she is under weight for her age.

80 lbs does seem to be on the small side, but she is still young so she has room to grow.... I feed Mongo the Purina One and he does good on it... so I dont have any advise in the food department.

Miss Marley was about 90-95 lbs at 8 months. But Capone's sister was 75 lbs at 8 months. I don't believe 80 lbs is abnormal for a Mastiff. Keep in mind a Mastiff can take between 2-3 years to reach there full grown potential, some Mastiff lines can take up to 4 years. A slow, steady growing puppy is a healthy puppy! :)

I don't support feeding Purina One for multiple reasons. I an new here and don't want to step on any toes, but two of my biggest reasons for being against Purina One is that there second ingredient on all the dry food is Corn. Corn is a filler and a source of allergies for so many dogs. My second reason, which is the most important of all is that they use Menadione Sodium Bisulfate Complex as an ingredient in there dog foods. Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex is a form of synthetic Vitamin K and is a questionable ingredient. Menadione Sodium Bisulfite is a banned ingredient in Europe due to the harmful side effects, it is a known for it's carcinogenic effects and it is toxic to kidneys, lungs, liver, mucous membranes. The FDA has banned it in over the counter supplements for humans due to the high toxicity levels, but have taken a more lax approach to this being in pet foods. Your pet can safely get Vitamin K in it's natural form by eating leafy green vegetables or a premium food that simply has natural Vitamin K or a natural source of Vitamin K (alfalfa, broccoli or kelp). There are plenty of pet foods out there without this questionable ingredient that I would consider first. (http://www.sciencelab.com/xMSDS-Menadione sodium bisulfite-9924604)

IMHO Solid Gold is a much better food. It's first 2 ingredients are a meat source, it does not contain Menadione Sodium Bisulfate, it does contain a few fillers. But these fillers are a higher quality filler than corn and are a lot further down on the list of ingredients. I would recommend changing from Purina One to Solid Gold. If you are looking at comparing dog foods, this is a great site to reference: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

I hope this helps, but it sounds like your puppy is growing just fine! :)

I had a hard time finding a dry dog food that I felt good about feeding to my dogs! I found one that is alright its called Nutram (I'm in Canada) but I still feed my dogs mainly real food that I make for them with beef, chicken, turkey and/or salmon. They get dry food in the morning, just so that they don't become too fussy for when we go on vacation and have them babysat.

Pandora is 7 months and 110lbs.

Plus the dogs like my cooking more than my kids do! lol

Yeah I know about the corn as a filler and have been thinking about changing him to ToTW (Taste of The Wild) I know is a GREAT dry food for extra large breeds. I didnt know about the Vitamin K situation. So thats good to know.

If I were to recommend a dry food to someone with a large dog it would be ToTW, as I am also on a Great Dane forum and almost every single person swears by it. They have the knowledge to back it up, not just that they like it.

I would think again about changing to TOTW. Diamond says it's a all life stages food but the calcium in it is to high for a large breed puppy. You should keep the calcium levels lower than 1.7% to ensure a slow steady growth. That will help with any hip/elbow issues. The TOTW formulas all have calcium levels in the 2.1% range. Here are a few links to some of the large breed puppy foods that I have had success with.

My 10mo old puppy has done GREAT on Wellness Large Breed Puppy since soon after we got him. Innova LBP gave him slightly runny stools so I put him on Wellness and it has been great.
