Sniffing

I have an 18 month old OEM, and he sniffs, EVERYTHING. Is this normal? It seems like he gets obsessive with the sniffing, especially when on a walk and I'm like, "Dude! WTF?"

It is normal. It is how they identify with everything, we recognize by sight they recognize by smell. Sometimes intact dogs can be a little worse but I would say a lot of sniffing comes with the territory. If we are training then I take them out before hand and let them get it out of their system. We then do our training and they can go back to sniffing after.

Oscar sometimes finds a particular smell that he loves ... there's nothing there (another dog's "mark", roadkill, garbage, etc.) but he's completely and totalyl engrossed. Generally I let him sniff as much as he wants unless he's a) near something potentially dangerous like in the middle of the road or the object is hazardous or b) he's pulling on me to get to it. Both those instances warrant a "Leave it" (still working on that one) and, failing that, a short tug. I'd say it's pretty normal :)
