Security System

I lurk on a golden retriever forum, since I used to work with them alot. Still love them but don't have much in common with the people on the forum. They're snobs, IMO.
Anyways someone posted a question: What kind of security system do you have for your home? Some of the responses got me thinking. They have at least one dog that's on the large side. What more could you need? Then I realized we're talking golden retrievers here; they would open the door for the robbers & show them where the good stuff is, if it gets them attention.
So does anyone here feel the need for additional security? Alarm systems, guns, etc.?
I for one feel very secure with 4 dogs rushing anyone who comes in the door. And I'm just outside a small town that is not very nice.

As long as the would be intruders aren't packing cookies, I feel pretty safe with Junior there.

I don't really. But ever since my boyfriend started working overnights in January, I was a little bit nervous being home alone all night. by myself. It gives me the creeps. But having Dozer there definitely gives some comfort. Although he is only 5 months old and wouldn't hurt a flea, I know that big dogs can be intimidating even when people don't know what their temperament is like.

Hedgehog I wouldn't underestimate the protective power of your puppy. Their dedication is amazing. He may not know just what to do to the bad guy, but I'm sure he would lay down his life for you. That's just how they are. BTW I have a feeling you would reciprocate for him.

I was actually having this discussion the other day. People seem to think that having a dog is enough, ( even the person who's working with Thor said that) HOWEVER I stated that there are exceptions to the rule. Those that are really determined or worse drugged out would still be a threat. Dogs can be shot, stabbed, beaten, just like us, so having a dog IMO doesn't make things fool proof. Another thing to think about is IF the dog will do anything. A dog can put up a great display but as far as substance....not so much.

I'm actually looking into some extra incentive like mace, concealed weapons training ( just need to find a class). I already have an alarm system and Thor is pretty good at it if I do say so myself, LOL.

When we have our own home, we will have a security system. My husband also wants to get a gun. I'd like to think that one of the dogs would defend us if someone broke in but right now they love everyone and think everyone wants to be their friend. Granted I have had some traumas in life so I tend to be overly cautious.

Worry, oh hell no! The only dilemma I would have if someone was to try and come in with our 2 filas is when to call the cops. We feed raw, a 200 pound man would feed them for :lolbangtable:33 days.

My daughter is looking at me like I'm crazy because I can't stop laughing at this!

We live in a very low crime area. We have a large asshole Doberman, Branka, and a semi-automatic gun. We're good.

I agree here. I assume instinct would kick in :)
It's funny because today I was out talking with my neighbor, and he has 2 small dogs. One Pomeranian mix and one Chihuahua. and I had Dozer out with me and his little Chihuahua was on the deck, and Dozer, as always was way too inquisitive about this small being. He started getting upset because he couldn't get up there and play with her and started to bark. and I made a comment like "Oh, he wants to play with her so bad!" and then he said in all seriousness, "More like have her for a snack" .... uhh does my 5 mo. old puppy look that vicious to you??? :lolbangtable:but apparently that's a good thing? right? ha

LOL!

With what I've been reading about Filas that's pretty much all you need.

We have a security system and are planning on adding motion sensors. We live in a very nice hood but why take chances. Daisy is 5.5 months but even full grown there are easy ways to stop a dog. Lob a steak over the fence before you go in. *shrugs* Honestly we don't have that much to steal but I would prefer not to have strangers in my home. It just gives you a wierd feeling, having had the experience once before in an apartment. We also have a doggie door that an adult Daisy will fit through with no problems. So if someone were so inclined, they could crawl through the doggie door providing treats to the dogs and walk through the house and if they don't open a door the alarm wouldn't go off. The doggie door is why we are adding motion sensors. If an intruder comes in while we're home, I'll shoot to protect my family, the dog isn't responsible. :)

I really think dogs are a deterrent to the amateur thieves. If someone wants to get in they will.

95% of burglurs are punk kids. Looking for an easy target. Just a sign alone will stop that 95%. Like my brinks signs I keep out front. That leaves 5%. 3% of them are gonna go next door after the first bark. The remaining 2% would have to be so high on drugs they's just fall in Kona's food dish. HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Hand guns are worthless if you cant shoot real well under extreme stress. A riot pump action 12g, just point in the genral dirction and swiss cheese a 6x6 area. What you dont hit, wont be staning around waiting for the shell to discharge.

Lets also keep in mind that if a burgler is walking around with steak, dog treats, or the like, they are not learning what to do They know what to do. Like remove the glass from the window frame, or shatter the sliding glass window with low vibration, or even a good old diamond bit. Cut phone lines, all the tricks. Then you need to figure if there coming at you like that, it aint random. You might check your sons room for dope. They would also likely already know just what they are cming for and where it's at. Say a safe in the master. Before the alarm calls back they can be gone. I say all that to say any thief an alarm can stop, a sign that say's you have an alarm will do the same.

Now I'll tell ya'll just what I told the Brinks guy trying to sale me a system. I'll buy it, give you 100 bucks, and let you keep what every you can carry out my house. Just jump on over that fence and come in that back door. I still have only the sign. hahahaha

Now home invasion..... That scares me. Diffrent mind set and criminal level. Almost always armed and they crime alone carries life in prison. Murder carries life. If a man will comit one crime that carries life he likely aint concerned with reaction for action. Thats a very violent crime all the time.

The beauty of a pump shotgun is the sound itself is generally enough to get their attention and you'll be shooting em in the back after that. :)

I have an Auto-5 shotgun, they'd be wishing the first sound they heard was of it pumping. :D
