Scary morning with Triton- He ate a pill!

So my 16 year old has a major cold and slept on the coach and left a Alka Seltzer Cold and Plus capsule on the coffee table. It must have landed on the floor as this morning when we let Triton out of our bedroom he came back with a foil pack in his mouth. We immediately grabbed it and noticed one was missing, we found it in the kitchen and the capsule had been chewed open and the liquid was GONE! Hubby immediately gave him food and water and I jumped on the phone to our local animal hospital to ensure that we did not need to take him in. They said with the dosage, his weight etc. he will be fine. When I got to work I called our vet just to double check and they said he'd be fine. My son felt horrible but I think it was a huge wake up call that he has to be careful- Especially when I told him that it could have caused kidney damage! I'm doggy proofing the house again tonight when I get home!

It's hard too when they grow so fast. At 11 weeks Bentley can reach the top of our kitchen table and he can get his tongue onto the top edge of the counters. I left a knife by the cutting board not thinking about it and Bentley was quick to try to lick it off, thankfully my hubby caught him and I learned my lesson. We are always lecturing the kids about keeping their toys esp the small ones off the hallway floor and their bedroom doors shut

FYI, don't feed or allow to drink untill you've talked to the vet (which obviously should be right away). It could cause complications if its the wrong thing.

Apollo ate an entire bottle of the cat's thyroid pills (they were chewable and chicken flavored, sigh), that I'd have SWORN were out of his reach, and Arty literally tore apart my husband's albuteral inhaler....The vet said no problem for the inhaler, but we had to make Apollo puke up the pills.

Good advice! We were just in a panic and it was the first thing we thought of but after what you posted it sure makes sense!

Our lab ate her newly scripted liver medication, one months worth. I know I had the bottle out of her reach, but I did not think about the sneeky cat. She thought it was a great toy to roll around. The bottle was in pieces and all pills gone. Since I had no clue what time she ate them, and I had just come home from work, I took her to the emergency room and they puped her stomach, but most of them were already digested.

How may I ask did you get Apollo to puke up the pills? Im asking because I think its a really handy thing to know just in case...

Hmm...I know the vet I go to puts some kind of gel in the dogs eye causing them to vomit but I don't know what it's called.

What's funny is my old vet did it too. You'd be surprised but it does work. Thankfully I've never had to make a dog puke, but I have seen them do it a few times.

My vet tech friend said the gel is called Apomorphine.

Hydrogen peroxide in a turkey baster to make sure he swollowed it. I know there are other methods, but thats what the vet said when I called.

FYI, DO NOT MAKE YOUR DOG PUKE UP ANYTHING TILL YOU'VE CHECKED WITH THE VET, SOME THINGS'LL DO MORE DAMAGE COMING UP THAN STAYING DOWN!

Very true! Just like kids, its not always best to make them sick if they've swallowed poison. Strange how much dogs are like kids....
