Reoccurring pad injuries

Maybe still check the horse supply store, the one here had a whole section of different types of leg coverings and first aid, they may have something permanent that would fit him.

It was more than a year since he last injured himself like this but I caught him licking his leg about an hour after we got home today. I never saw him slip or fall today so once again I have no idea what might have caused the injury. The only thing I know that is common between all the injuries is that they occurred while he was on an off leash walk (multiple locations) on the day after a full Chinook. For those who don't know a Chinook is a strong wind that melts all the snow. During a Chinook the temperature can reach double digits above freezing. The day after is typically at or just above freezing.
The location of the injury today is weird. It is a flap of skin on the underside of that pad which opens away from his leg.

My first thought is Saw grass,it is a very sharp broad grass.is there anything like that where he is running?

I managed to get a picture of it. The flap is now gone. I did get distracted by the super bowl so I admit I wasn't paying as much attention to him as I should have been.

Since he clearly was licking it he now is wearing his sock again. It amazes me how skinny his legs are when the feathering gets taken away.

I'm getting a lot of answers on a local Facebook page suggesting ice is the cause. I don't know about ice since there isn't any visible right now but frozen dirt could be the cause. Fast stops and turns could cause his leg to flatten and place that pad on the ground. It also has the benefits of explaining why Kryten has never had that problem. He doesn't move fast.

I probably shouldn't have laughed, but the comment about Kryten is so funny. That's Ella. I have to really encourage her to get moving and then it's only for a short burst. My boys can run circles around her for hours.

Poor Jiggers. That looks painful. I think the frozen dirt theory is plausible. I know after we have a big melt and a freeze the next day the soil is frozen in ridges.

Laugh all you want. Kryten is definitely not a sprinter. He will try to follow Jiggers at the start of each off leash walk but by the time he moves 2 steps Jiggers is 10 lengths ahead of him so he gives up and spends most of his time wandering around marking tufts of grass and trying to get people to pet him.
Fetch in the yard is Kryten standing between Jiggers and where the ball was thrown but once Jiggers gets past him Kryten comes over for a head scratch. The ball gets dropped and he moves back into position to block Jiggers. So he does get some exercise but nothing compared to Jiggers which is likely why he doesn't get the same injuries (only swollen elbows).

I was trying to be funny...he can't run free because he is being injured...but he wants to run free...sorry sarcasm doesn't always translate well via typing.

There could be a problem with the frozen dirt theory. For the first time ever he has torn the skin off the pad when there is no chance the ground is frozen. I caught him licking his leg today and sure enough there is a chunk of skin missing. It might be time to look further into protective guards.

I have my golden wearing healers boots and they also have leg wraps. She can't get them off at all. (I've watched her try) she has a long term foot thing happening and after daily foot soaks, drain, clean dressing then the wraps/boots her foot is finally healing. I got them on Amazon. the brand name is "Healers"

The wraps might work. The boots look too short and I really doubt that they would stay on when no other boots do. He got the Irish Setters tiny feet (his paws are the same size as his legs). The only reason his winter boots stay on is that they are attached by strings.
