Greetings Everyone,
I wanted to ask a few questions and get a few opinions from you good folk who own/have owned CC's. I would appreciate any of your insight and recommendations. I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this post.
We previously owned a CC (died at the age of 11), who was a true gentle giant. When we got him we knew nothing of the breed and did not do the due diligence of research (young and dumb). He was an excellent, highly socialized dog. He was very low energy and mostly just lumbered around the house. I never worried he would harm anyone or anything. Yet, I feel (after some research) that he may have been an exception.
I currently own a 1 yr old, male Bulldog, who I believe would greatly appreciate a playmate. Therefore, I began the process of adopting a female CC from a rescue. She is 4 months old and in need of a good home. However, due to her being a rescue, I have no knowledge of her bloodline or lineage temperament.
In preparation for her, I have been reading about CC's and keep seeing re-occurring themes such as: not being good for first time dog owners, territorial, often dominate, while other CC's at the rescue have had aggression issues etc. This research has caused some trepidation in my choice of a CC. I have come to you all seeking your opinion, whether it is in the vein of re-assurance of or dissuasion from my CC adoption.
I am not interested in a dog to "protect" me or my family nor would I be catering to those instincts in the dog. I am a big guy and I have security/firearms in my home for my personal protection. I merely want a jogging/hiking buddy who wants to enjoy life with people that are dedicated to responsible care of their pets. I have no small children, yet I have many who visit me frequently. I also take my dog to parks, training classes, and try to socialize them as much as possible. The last thing in the world I ever want is for a pet of mine to hurt anyone or another animal. So here are my questions (thanks for sticking with me this far):
Is socialization the key to a well-behaved CC?
Would I be better served by going through a recommended breeder and selecting a lower energy CC?
I am a pretty easy-going guy, do CC typically vie for dominance to the point where I would have to alter my demeanor to own one?
My bulldog often likes to play bite and will play a little rough with me- though I try to discourage the behavior(yet is ALWAYS gentle with strangers and children). This does not worry me because he is 65lbs and 14 inches off the ground, but a CC exhibiting this behavior would be slightly more concerning. Do you find that your CC's play rough or tend to get mouthy at times?
I see a lot of CC's with training/prong collars, do you find them necessary in training?
I really want her to be the right dog for me, because I love the look of the breed and I have the time and resources to take excellent care of her. However, I want what is best for both the dog and myself. I would really appreciate any insights you care to share.
Thanks so much!
