Puppy sitting

Haven't been on lately; been puppy sitting for a friend. She has 5 dogs, all but one are rescues. She also has 4 other dogs that have been kind of dumped on her; it's a long story. None of them are mastiff dogs at all; it's always surprising when I get exposed to other dogs, how easy going & laid back our 4 are. Ballew.JPGBallew; the only non-rescue. Beautifully trained GSD.Daisy.jpgDaisy, age 14. Such a powerful, graceful lady.Misc. 022.jpgMissy (left) age 9; Angel (r) age 16. Missy is a handful; she picks on Ballew until he just can't stand it & he goes after her. Angel totally ignores everyone, including me. :)The rest of the crew are so little or so active I can't get a good shot of them. There's Hershel, the HUGE lab, who tries to lick the camera; then the other ones are a tibetan spaniel, a shih tsu, pomeranian, & maltese/yorkie mix. The little yappers are driving me crazy. I'm so happy when I get to come home & take care of the bulls; it's so easy & comforting to be around gentle, loving dogs.

I'm finally back home! I puppysit for this friend on a regular basis; she only lives a mile away. She does work with a friend who is a trainer for a guide dog group; then I just keep her pack in line. It's usually not a problem but I also work 30 hours; and this time, I was working at a Renaissance Festival on Saturdays. AND...yesterday, my housemate found 2 GSD puppies, wandering down the road. They're 4 -6 months old. Obviously littermates. The female was in great shape; typical barky hyper young one. The male appeared to be ill; goopy eyes, & very weak. They were both loaded with fleas. No collars or tags. No chips. We couldn't keep them here so they spent the night in crates in my van. They did very well; not a peep. We took them out this morning & they pooped what appeared to be solid mud. They were eating grass & mud to stay alive. The male was getting a little better, after a couple of good solid meals & fresh water. We finally got in touch with the local GSD rescue, who took them right in. Treated them immediately for fleas & ticks, then took them to the vet. The male is suffering from flea anemia. The fleas were literally eating him alive. Both were loaded with hook & whipworm. The rescue was very happy to take them & find them a good home. So now that all THAT drama is over, my housemate goes into the hospital tomorrow for shoulder replacement surgery. A whole new set of problems.

Oh my gosh poor babies. Sounds like you found them just in time. Thanks to you they have a bright future ahead of them.

Great pictures! Ballew is my favorite. I'll always have a soft spot for gsds.

Just got an email from the rescue; the boy is @ the vet's overnight, getting transfusion & iv therapy. They're pretty sure he'll make it.
I put an ad on Craiglist for found puppies. I'm hoping the scumbag who owned these beauties responds. I'm not a pleasant person when an animal is abused or neglected.

Oh no. :( Sending prayers for the little boy.

I wish animal abusers were punished more appropriately. Most of these people get less than a slap on the wrist and are free to do it all over again. It is infuriating.

Just because they can't speak for themselves. :( Glad you were able to take care of them, hope the little guy makes it alright.

Thats awsome ya'll do what ya'll do. It really is. Hope your house mate's surgery gets done with zero issues as well.

So are you saying the dog could die from the fleas? Or are there other issues? Thats gotta be a lotta fleas

Chuck you live in Florida; you know how bad the insect population can be. This guy & his sister had been running loose long enough to have digested MUD, because it was all he could find to eat. The female was obviously the more dominant of the 2; she got the lion's share of the meager meals they found. In addition, these puppies were in the same vicinity for more than a day. Neighbors fishing at the harbor saw them the day before, but did nothing about it. When dogs get dumped, they stay very close to where they got dumped, for fear of missing their owners when they come back for them, & not knowing where they should go or do. He was obviously infested before he got dumped, & with a lack of food & fresh water, the fleas took over. These dogs probably NEVER got a bath, or flea treatment, or ANYTHING for their entire 4 to 6 months of life. I just wish their a**hole owners would respond to the Craigslist ad I put up. The fact that I got no response just reinforces the dumping idea. And I can't understand why. These 2 looked like purebred GSD's. Their temperament was awesome; the female was a very happy girl & the boy was perking up with just good food & water. The transfusions & iv's pumped him up; he's going to be ok.

It's a real shame being how absolutly easy it is to adopt out puppies. Just a FREE PUPPY add on CL will bring out people with no problem. And if they make the add sad with a little lost my job cat afford to care for them...... It's a damn shame. I can absolutly dislike a dog and once he's mine he'll die here. Our mini wiener is a good example. Cant think of not one thing I like about him, but he gets the same as the rest of the dogs. hahahaha.

It might be screwed up, but I feel worse for a dog than most grown folks in these situations. Kids and dogs should never be hurt. Of all the injustice, those two I dont think even God could provide me with a logical argument.

Just got word that the boy is back with his sister @ the foster's; the vet said another 12 hours or so & he wouldn't have made it. I was really hoping that the owner would respond to my CL ad, so I could say "Meet me in the Walmart parking lot. I'll be the one holding a baseball bat."

Email from Diane, who is temporarily fostering the GSD pups: (They have names!)

Hunter is a brat puppy now, running and bouncing, demanding attention and wanting to eat everything in sight. He is playing in the wading pool, with the toys and jumps like crazy. Casey is also full of herself. They are in the process of getting posted on the website.
