  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Sorry one other thing. Always list him as a mutt. At the vet, lease apps, every and anything that ask, he is just a mutt.

would it stand to reason then that if they could recognize EM and not Filas and you have only these two as the only options then a DNA test would be useful. The pup is only one or the other. If the test says yes its a EM then its EM. but if the test came back inconclusive then you would Know its a fila. Ruthcatrin any thoughts? man , i am with you guys those mommas look EM . just an observation

Thing is I've never seen results come back "inconclusive". Theres so little genetic differences between breeds that they WILL find a match, it just might be a list of five breeds instead of 1 or 2. Especially where they don't do Fila's and Wisdom Panel in particular states that its most accurate with North American dogs....they'd give you back a list of their best guesses, not "inconclusive" or EM crossed with we don't know.....

Angel probly has the best approach. Socialize like heck, train like heck, and handle on the assumption that he's at least part Fila and will show at least some of the temperment. If down the road he turns out to have a temperment closer to an EM (and there are some fairly hard tempered EMs) then take it as a happy surprise.

And yes, for all instances where you have to list breed: mutt, maybe mastiff cross, but mutt.

Angelbears he does not follow us from room to room, he kind of does his own thing. He is extremely friendly to everyone, tail waging the whole time. He does not go on alert at all, in fact my other dogs bark and sound off at someone at the door and he will raise his head and lay it back down not even moving. He is extremely lazy and only wants to cuddle with anyone that will sit on the floor and just him crawl up in their lap.

I want to thank everyone for advice, I got railroaded by a breeder who I contacted for advice who yelled at me, told me that if I kept him he would turn so mean he could possibly bite my children, that I would have no social life and that I better prepare myself for a law suit. She said I was being dumb and wants me to turn him over to a rescue.

Apparently I'm not good enough for the breed is what I was getting out of it, since she went on and on about having raised over 400 fila. But its funny because even she said he doesn't look fila.

My hubby wants to keep him. My family loves him very much. I think we can give him what he needs, we just have to set strict rules.

I say keep him. He doesnt look like a Fila to me. he may or may not come into a fila's temp but he is still WAY to young to tell. I say treat him as if he will come into temp and start training right now so if he does he will be manageable. Good luck.

And she knows you just how well? Honestly I've not seen anything in what I'm reading from you that has huge alarm bells ringing. I'd have already said so if there was. Yes if he turns out to have a true Fila temperment he may not be ideal for your household, BUT you're aware of that and appear to be ready and planning on how to cope.

I think we are set and are ready to take what comes. I have moved up training and we start tomorrow, the vet recommended getting him fixed in two weeks even though for large breeds you should normally wait longer. Thoughts on this? We have a list of places dog friendly to take him to to socialize him while he is still in friendly puppy stage. We will start taking him out only on his leash so that when and if his temp shows throughhe doesn't feel it is a punishment. Crate training is continuing. I will stay apart if the forum cause I will probably need more advice as time goes on.
Thanks everyone!!!!

Before you agree to neutering this young have a read here: http://www2.dcn.org/orgs/ddtc/sfiles/LongTermHealthEffectsOfSpayNeuterInDogs.pdf Honestly I see NO reason to neuter this early except convience, you're not even having temperment issues that MIGHT be horomone related. I'll admit I have my own biases on the subject, but aleast do some looking at the potential consequences first. Plus horomones have NOTHING to do with a Fila's stereotypical personality.

Good luck! And don,t be afraid to ask questions, even if you feel they're stupid!
