Peeing in the house...THIS IS NEW!!!!!

Ok we have had Murphy for 5 months now and he just turned 3. We have NEVER had an accident in the house EVER until recently. Last week I was in the basement doing the summer/winter clothing change over and while I was at it I decided to do a "spring" cleaning of all the totes. I ended up with 2 garbage bags at the bottom of the stairs. Before I could get them up and out of the house my daughter came up and informed me that Murphy peed on one . I was shocked. Since I didn't catch him I couldn't correct him
I marked it up as an OOOPS!
So yesterday I put all the "to go clothing" into bags and put them in the corner till I can get them to someone in need and once again my daughter came up and informed me she stepped on wet carpet and the bag is wet. Murphy had just came up from the rec-room.

I am lost. Is it plastic bags he likes or is he just being bad? Any suggestions would be great
And to add we did loose our previous dog in April. Thank you musicdeb

Could the clothes have another dog's smell on them? He could be marking them because of that. If not another dog's smell, then I have no other suggestions.

I'm sure others will post.

Yes our other dogs scent most definatly would have been on them. Even washed they were put away last year when he was here. I didn't even consider that. I really hope that's all it is.

I rescued my last dog Rao at 3 years of age and he did this without fail when ever something like a plastic bag or something that did not belong in the room was put there, pretty much always plastic. Besides in those cases he never peed in the house, I always thought he had a cast iron bladder because he would go for 12 hours with out wanting to go out. I usually had to drag him out of bed in the mornings. We learned that as long as everything was in its place an no bags were left around there were no issues. You can try this with Murphy and see if it works. If not you should probably have a urinalysis done to make sure he doesn't have an infection, especially if he starts peeing on other things. Good luck and I hope all goes well with him.

I really hope he doesn't think this is a good thing lol. He didn't do it until I went thought the bins. He has spent time down there before this and never had an issue. Oh boy
Murphy is the same. He has no problem going hours and hours without going outside. I have to drag is arse out of bed in the am to go pee as well. 2 things happened 1. cleared out bins 2. Garbage bags. I could do a test and put a garbage bag on the main floor. One with nothing and another with bin stuff.

I'm going with marking too, BUT, if it continues, or if you notice his pee smelling different, or if he starts changing his pee habits so that he's (outside) peeing every spot but only in dribbles, have him checked for a UTI.

Thank you for all the help. I will keep close eye. I will notice a change in his pee right away since the joke around here is Murphys 5 min pees.
