Opinions on dog parks?

KMD - forgive my ignorance but do you need to worry about salt water crocs at your beach or is it the wrong area for that?

I've always wanted to visit Australia but the idea of the crocs pretty much terrifies me. :p

No crocs at the beach! They are found in water holes and rivers/creeks away from beaches. I our local river has a few crocs, but crazy locals still water-ski in it!!!!

Most of the beaches I go to have shark nets, although neither of my dogs do more than splash around in the shallows.

KMD - In that case perhaps I will be brave enough to visit a beach when I finally do make it out that way one of these days. :)

And I believe it about water skiing in rivers with crocs. Every Aussie I have ever met has had nerves of steel. I am perfectly willing to admit that I tend to be more of a wuss. lol :)

I personally never take my dogs to any dog park. To many people DONT vaccinate or worm their dogs. Plus. It really goes against a dogs nature to be thrown in with a big group of strange dogs. They have pack logistics.

My exs Boston was mauled to death at an off leash park 2 years ago by two rotties and the owner (and other bystanders) did nothing but stand there screaming while he tried desperately to get her out of their mouths.

People think dog parks mean they don't have to have control over their dogs.

We tend to humanize our babies. And this unfortunately is one way to do this that can be very costly.

I have "friends" for Brody. They come over and play when he's up for it. In the safety of our yard. Where I know he is safe. I NEVER rely on other people to keep my dog out of conflict. I know how big man thinks. And if another dog even raises a brow to him in an aggressive way. He will put them in their place.

Not worth the risk IMO

Angelbears. Thank you. It was my ex. But none the less I liked the little dog. She was sweet. Too good to die like that. Have a good night.

Dog parks are a big *nope* with us. We already run risks by going to dog shows. Dog parks seem like an accident waiting to happen. Too many germs; too many dogs not being watched. Our county has a law about dog bites. If a dog - or any other mammalian pet - bites & breaks the skin, it has to be reported to the county animal control. It could result in a death sentence for the offending dog. I refuse to take that chance. If my dog gets into it with a little dog, guess who would die?
I also am very careful about cross contamination from work. I only wear work clothes & shoes to work; never wear them in the common area of the house, etc. I wouldn't want to wonder if the dogs have tracked something into my car that will spread like wildfire in the kennels.
