Opinions on Cropping Puppies Ears.

DDSK, it is hard to tell from the pictures but the crop doesn't look too long. It should make an equilateral triangle when it is the proper crop. We are seeing a lot of crops that are actually coming out too long these days. Cropping is a personal choice but if you go that route try and find a vet that is familar with the crop to ensure your dog gets the one that you prefer.

That's a beautiful crop.

Yes it is. His breeder had them done before by her vet before I picked them up. Don't know why more ppl don't have their breeders take care of it for them instead of waiting.

I was anti-crop, and ended up rescuing a Doberman that already had cropped ears and getting a show Dane puppy from a breeder who required cropped ears. I was surprised by a couple things:
1) The ears are sooooo much more expressive then I would have thought. Granted, a Dane crop is much longer than a cc crop, but our doberman has a shorter crop and they are still very expressive, probably more so than the Dane.
2) The cropped ears really didn't seem to bother our puppy at all. By the time we got him (a couple days after the crop) he was no longer on paid meds, only antiobiotics, and was active and playing with his siblings. When the scabs started formally, his ears were a bit itchy, but applying bag balm or neosporan to the edges helped with that. He did hate having the tape pulled off his ears once we started posting, but I don't think people usually post cc ears.
3) If it was my choice, I wouldn't crop a puppy due to the expense/time needed to maintain (again, based on my experience with a Dane show crop), but wouldn't hesitate to get a puppy for a reputable breeder who required cropping. I love the look, but don't personally feel its necessary.

Scorning, you summed up my opinion perfectly!

I was also completely anti-crop until my dane's breeder called to tell me the show boy in her litter would be available to me, since she decided not to show him. The cropped ears are SOOO SOOO expressive! Like satellite dishes on their heads :)

BUT- if I were getting another dane, I don't know if I'd crop again. It is some work to post/clean/tape, and you really do get some nasty comments from mean people. I looooove the look of a beautiful crop, I just don't know if I'd do it again.

I never posted, taped or used anything for Solo's ears besides rubbing them, which was free.

Danes, boxers, and dobes have a much longer crop than a Corso. A show crop is what you think of when you think of a typical boxer/dane/dobe. You absolutely must post and tape them, and even then not every dog ends up with two standing ears. It's time consuming, but I love the look. I was surprised that my cropped boy was equally as expressive as my natural eared boxers. And there was the bonus that his silhouette looked like Batman in the window at night.

Well said, but I wasn't talking about any other dogs. Just mine.
But since you're talking about show crops I had a boxer with a show crop and never once did anything more than rub. She was a great dog. RIP.

I'd love to see a picture of your boxer. I've never known a boxer with a show crop that didn't need posting for at least a little while.

Oooooh me too! I'd love to see that! So cool.

My dane was up and done by 17 weeks. After that, he never needed another posting- so maybe some dogs just have really strong ear leather/cartilage? It would have been heaven to have just had to rub them :)

I prefer floppy ears because I'm weird and just love them all floppy and silly. But I have seen some very nice looking crops. Just get recommendations on the vet or you could end up w one that doesn't give you the look you want.
