New pup diesel

After losing our cane corso mix to cancer at around 5 years, I brought he this lil guy to cheer up my wife and other dog jack. He was born on jan 3. He was the last one of the litter left and he is a lil smaller then his brothers and sisters but he seems like he is going to be a real good dog, seems to be learning and picking things up fast!image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Here is his pic and pics of his parents, the parents are much better looking in person, the pics do them no justice. Dad weighs around 165lbs the mom about 135

His legs also have a lil now to them, the breeder gave us some vitmine C to give him with his food, I was also reading that cod liver oil is supposed to be good for this as well. How much of the fish oil would be recommended for a pup his age?

Congratulations on your new puppy :) when you say his legs have a little "bow" to them, do you mean his front legs? or hind end?

There is some good information on the GREATDANELADY.COM website regarding bowed legs, knuckling over.

Best to you and your new pup :)

Welcome to your new family member, Diesel! I checked out the GreatDaneLady website. Some great info except I disagree with transition to new food and the food she lists, Precise, is full of grains and has chicken fat. Most mastiffs are allergic to grains and chicken in kibble.

Transition to new food should take 10-15 days to help the digestive system get used to the new food.

BTW, is Diesel a Fila? His mom looks EM and his dad looks like an EM mix./QUOTE] This is exactly what I thought... Mom looks like a purebred EM the male looks like some sort of EM mix. Who was the breeder? Maybe some other pics could show something WAY different. in either case the pup looks like a healthy lil guy. I too want to know if it is front or find legs that are bowed out but I am guessing it is front.

Lol Em mix it's clearly a fila mix, is it that hard to admit that the male is a fila mix. Where did you get Em from I'm curious.

Yes his front legs have the slight bow, I switched to lower protein food bit. C and fish oil pills. We'll see if any progress in a week or so.
I got him from a breeder in palmdale, he said both parents were pure breed filas. I did not see the mom, just the dad and he looks a lot different then in the pic. I'll try to have him text me a better pic.
Now with that pic of the mom I am seeing EM as well. I'm going to call him and ask more questions.
Eather way tho I'm real happy with the puppy and he is very smart.

The pup is cute and I hope you are able to help him with his legs. Although there is a question as to how much fila is in him you should be aware of fila temperament just to be on the safe side. Its always best to be prepared rather than being caught off guard should he exhibit temperament of any degree.

tojvan, are asking me or dogman#1? I see EM mix in the father because that's what I see.
Oh sorry lol I quoted the wrong comment I apologize for the confusion. The question was directed at dogman#1, I see a bit of fila since the earset is beneath eye level and the ears are houndy.

The fila attitude is what I'm looking for, I'm getting a house on 10 acres about one acre fenced in. And I work about a hour away. Need a dog great with the family yet bold and brave enough to protect the family when I'm not there.

My Luke is a EM/Fila and at 15 months has not shown any Fila temperament as far as I can tell. My first mastiff so have nothing to compare with.
He does what I got him for [was not looking for a Fila, lol] let me know if someone is coming up the driveway, someone walking down the street he doesn't know, strange car parked on the street, alert me to strangers if we are out walking, and just being big and brindle is enough to stop people from approaching us. More then that he is so far friendly with people.

Use this product called suregrow- it will fix the legs in a few weeks. Are you feeding a large breed puppy food? The problem you are having is typically a result of to much protein and the wrong protein: phosphors combo. Making the dog grow faster than his bones and joints can keep up with. I believe his dad is off a dog named Titan? Are sharkaun? I've seen youtubes of parents if that's the same pup. We used suregrow on some pups with bad easty westy problem, and hooked bones worked great.

Check and see if parents are inbred are line bred, this is sometimes a reason why the hooks brew there ugly head.

Right now I switched him over to adult kirkland brand dog food. His dad was named Brutus.

Which Kirkland? The grain free Nature's Domain or the Lamb and Rice?
The Nature's Domain is pretty good but high in carbs and your pup will drink more than normal amounts of water.
I recommend going on better quality food until he gets better at least.
