I also happen to be in Cali. I've had dogs before nothing this big. But I can definitely handle this size dog. Just looking for some info

Welcome aboard~ I do not know any CA breeders. Have you considered rescuing a mastiff for a rescue organization or animal shelter?

Is there something I should look for in a breeder and is it safe to send a deposit without even seeing the pup? Or should I go in person to look at it

I would not recommend sending a deposit without seeing the pup and checking out the breeder and their facility.

Check out the Breeder Discussion part of the forum with a wealth of information regarding breeders.

I rescued Titan so I do not have a lot of experience with breeders.

There are a number of CC owners on the forum and they will hopefully post some additional info for you.

Garrett, I found this from a previous post about finding a pup from a breeder posted by a trainer/vet assistant/breeder:

I personally offer photos & video of the pups to my buyers
Birth - photos of each (male & female)
1 wk - photos of each (colors on pups)
2 wks - photos of each ""
3 wks - video of them with mom & photos
4 wks - video of temperament testing starting all together & separate
5 wks - same as 4 weeks
6 wks - same as 4 wks & photos of each pup

I also have a application for folks to fill out so I know what there plans are, what color they request, & sex

I put my pups in categories

- working
- show
- pet

This way I know what pup best fits the new owners.

If your breeder will accommodate your request, you should ask for video & photos of the sex you are looking

This way it will help you in choosing a pup

Hi there... welcome to the forum and congrats on the new home and the decision to get a corso!

I have a corso who is just over 4 months. I got him from Black Shadow Cane Corso in NB, Canada, so probably not the ideal breeder for you, as it is out of the country. However, I will still share my experience!

I found the breeder and e-mailed her asking when her next planned litter was. She told me the next expected breeding and asked me to fill out the application on her website if I wanted to be put on the notification list for when the breeding was confirmed. The application was mostly about what I was hoping to get from a puppy (show/pet quality, temperament, etc), and what my lifestyle was (how long the pup would be alone each day, people in the household, etc). I was a bit far from the breeder, so I did not meet my pup until the day I took him home, however the breeder sent lots of pictures and I was allowed to visit after 6 weeks, had I wished. What I really liked was that at 7 weeks (ish) she did temperament testing, then judging on my application matched a puppy to me. And she couldn't have picked a better pup for me! He is laid back and loves to snuggle!

I would say that it CAN be safe to send a deposit without seeing the pup (I did it that way) but ONLY if you know that you are going with a reputable breeder. I met one of Black Shadow's dogs from a previous litter and the owner was very happy with the pup and breeder. After speaking with the breeder, I was able to tell how devoted she was to the breed and I happily sent along my deposit when the time came.

I honestly could not be happier with my pup. He is so smart! And stunning... people stop us everywhere we go to comment on how cute he is. Corso's are an amazing breed and I am sure you'll agree when you find your own!

Sorry, it was a bit long winded!

No worries my friend lol. Sounds like you found a very good dog. I emailed
castle guard about 2 days ago and still no response.

at castleguard they are really busy, she must get hundreds of emails so to get to everyone is pretty hard
and calling just shows you are a bit more serious
best bet is to call and leave a message, I think she recently had a litter and is working on that
I spoke to her too, and she was very easy to talk too.

Im in Canada, and considered going with her due to her long standing reputation and support
I was able to find a breeder here, she actually told me about them
best thing is to talk to them, let them know what you want in a breeder and dog
a good breeder should be there for you down the road and make you feel comfortable, not someone that wants a deposit
right away. She told me her "kennel" is a huge operation and has support and has litters rather often

There are a couple of breeders in California, but the big thing will be to find a breeder that you can build a relationship with (10 to 12 years) and that you like the look of their dogs. Contact them and talk to them, most will ship and give you references to talk to. There are several people on here with dogs from different breeders that might have experiences to share with you as well.

Powergc, I love Tony and the awesome updates. You are a great owner and devoted to the cutie and that is what we hope for when it comes to all our puppy owners.
