Maximus, our 11 month 150 lb English Mastiff has taken a liken to Winter Boots! We have had no problem with the furnature, chair legs, table legs, coffee table, Shoes or clothes, he never chewed anything..... i was begining to think i was blessed. Then about a month ago he took a liking to my new Baffin -100 extreme winter boots ($250), they lasted 2 weeks then i found teeth marks all across the foot part of the boot, big holes chewed in them!, I scolded him, shook the boot at him, called him a bad dog for chewing my boot. I went out and bought him more rubber chew toys, tires, squeeky toys etc. The next week i found my son's boots with teeth marks in them. We started putting our boots downstairs. lo and behold, someone forgot to throw their boots downstairs and we came home to chewed boots again. GRRRRRR, big holes chewed through the rubber foot part! We took his cage out as we thought he was good to have the run of the house, obviously not! We haven't caught him in the act but i need some advice to get him out of this very expensive taste for boots!

Only thing I've ever found with pups/dogs that chew shoes/boots that works is to put them out of reach until they outgrow the chewing :)

Honestly? Put your boots away. LOL Ruger is an amazing house dog and doesn't mess with anything but if I leave my Timberlands out......He will eat them in a minute. I guess it must be the leather, I don't know. Toilet paper is the other thing that cannot say no to. I keep the bathroom doors shut and the shoes put away. I consider myself lucky that I can leave him home and never have to "put things up" to keep him out of them so if boots and toilet paper are too much for him, I will just remove the temptation. Considering that he is big enough to get to EVERYTHING...I am feeling pretty good. Sounds like good training for the kids. I bet they put thier shoes up for the rest of thier lives. My boys were raised in a housefull of APBT's and to this day (they are grown with kids of thier own) thier shoes are put up neatly all of the time.

Exactly that Im afraid, if you dont want it chewed dont leave it in the way of temptation.

I had this issue this morning too. I woke up to obviouse tearing noises. I got up and went to Barron and he Had a brand new pair of my Boyfriends Sketchers. The heel INSIDE the shoe torn up (it was gel). Let's just say Matt was not impressed and all I could say to him was...They should have been in the closet.

Yep. Just like a child - keep it out of their reach, and/or supervise and redirect. Our pups have all been crate trained so for the first couple of years, when we are at work they are in the crate.

Boots on a hook above the reach of the dog or in a closed closet. This is the only cure.

I going to have to go with everyone else here. I learned the hard way to make sure my shoes were put away when Jiggers was a puppy. He destroyed 1 shoe for all but 3 pairs of shoes (including the pair I was wearing) in less than one hour. That was the last time shoes got left out.

Boone, my boy, is 3 and I still have to crate him when we aren't home because he'll eat things. I've just learned what he'll get into and what he wont and make sure there's nothing laying around he's interested in eating.

yep, the best thing is too make sure they are up and not out. I've had 3 pairs of sandals destroyed and my nice slippers. My tennis shoes seem to fair pretty well against his chewing, but he has chewed up most of my laces on them. My GF has had 3 pairs of her heels destroyed as well. It happens fast too....lol. If you think..they can't destroy this or that up while your back is turned for 5-minutes...haha think again. :)

I was thinking the other day what my EM has destroyed:
2 holes in the couch
3 holes in the carpet
all the edges and two legs of my coffee table chewed (he loves to chew wood)
all the edges of my bed frame chewed
my computer mouse
my GF's cell phone
my GF's center console in her car
my GF's head phones and mine
(lol my poor GF)
2 - Xbox controllers (completely destroyed)
hole in the carpet of my car
bamboo back scratcher
2 dog beds
shoes
clothes

hmm that's it for right now...I laughed when I thought about the list. I'm sure other EM owners can relate. it took me a while to get the hint, but I still make mistakes, lol. Good luck!

I used to think the same thing with my Mufasa. I started leaving him out thinking I didnt need to crate him anymore. Nope, after about 2 weeks of freedom he decided that if he could reach it then it needed a good chewing, only if he is by himself though. If I am around he doesnt even pretend to try but if I leave him for 5 minutes than he is going into chew mode.

Jade only usses her crate for about an hour at night then she sneaks (haha) up on the bed.

I like that ... Lesson learned. Ok removed temptation, big sign, boots downstairs, you won't get another pair if Max eats them!
