I have a 5 month old female english mastiff pup. I bought her at the end of november. All has gone well. She's growing well (60lbs as of yesterday), and seems to have no health issues. The only issue I'm having is with her food.
The breeder fed her a dry food, don't remember the brand, but it was unavailable where I live. I put her on blue buffalo, and she had loose stool/diarrhea problems. I then switched to wellness, and had the same issues. With both foods, her stool was fine at first, then went soft, and then went runny.
At the advice of my mother-in-law (breeder of champion english labs) I started feeding her bil jac frozen to correct the runny stool problems till I can figure out what brand food to put her on long term. The bil jac frozen did firm her stool immediately, and I'm continuing to feed her this until I can figure out what food to switch her to.
I've read quite a bit info, and it seems that many mastiffs have issues with grain based foods. I started looking into the meat based kibbles (like canidae, or taste of the wild). However, it appears that the protein levels in the meat based kibbles are higher than whats recommended for an English Mastiff puppy. Can someone help explain this? At this point, I'm having trouble deciding what's right to feed her!
Thanks for any help.
