Mastiff Paw Problems

I am new to this forum, so sorry if this was already covered in another discussion. My English Mastiff tends to chew the pads of her front paws every year around this time until fall time. Does anyone else have this problem? I put antibotic cream on them and clean them everytime she comes in from outside....please help.

More than likely it is a food or environmental allergy. Do a search here on the forum, tons of info about it. Antibiotics will not help.

BTW, welcome!

Our APBT, Cache, has food allergies and licks her paws a lot to the point where she has little raw spots on her pads when she's having a reaction to something. With that being said, she also has reactions to scented laundry detergents.

A great way to rule on whether it's a food allergy or not is to start on a raw diet with proteins that dogs are not typically allergic to. Slowly, over time you can start to introduce new foods and see whether or not your dog has a reaction to them if you want to determine precisely what the allergy is toward.

I agree, sounds like allergic reaction to the environment or food allergy. Process of elimination. It does help to wipe the paws every time he comes into the house from outside. Try giving the pup benadryl to help with the allergies until you can find the culprit. Regular benadryl which is 25mg is used. Normal dosage is 1 tablet for every 50 lbs. Titan is suppose to take 3 tablets but I give him 2 tablets and it works just fine.

Is the pup on any other medications? If he is, be sure that benadryl will not interact with the current medications.

According to my boss (vet), the dosage for Benedryl is 1-2 mg/lb (25 mg tablet). So for Baci at 110#, she gets 6 in the morning and 6 at night. Works like a charm.

Yes, I've heard of that dosage but IMO 6 tablets are way too much. Titan goes to sleep on 2 tablets. :)

Agree. Cane is 180 pounds and I give him 6. Start low and go up if you have to. You don't want your dog to build up a tolerance. I use Benedryl sparingly. I want it to work when he really needs it.

Sounds like a contact allergy to me if it happens same time of the year, spring and summer, some kind of grass allergy?? Agree with rinsing feet off every time she has been outside and use Benedryl

Benedryl doesn't put her to sleep. Instead of giving an NSAID to reduce the swelling in her eyes, (some allergy related), that is the reason for the 6 tabs BID. It has done wonders. Every dog is different, as said by Angelbears, start low and go up if necessary. But never more than 2 mg/lb.
