Jezzy can hear some very high pitched sounds, not many and not with any consistency. If the hearing test shows a small amount of hearing they make high pitched whistles that can be used to get there attention or you can get one of those cheap laser pointers to get their attention.

Jezzy is our best watch dog. The joke around here is, it is Jezzy job to wake the Filas if someone is coming in the house.

Exactly why I want to get him tested, in case he can hear a little something. If so, that whistle would be an awesome tool.

Thank you!

Holy shit how have I missed this!!! Magnum is yummy and I am completely green with envy!! Kris I love hand signals and have taught both my two hand signals as well as verbal commands. Index finger point toward sky means sit. Flat horzontal palm means down etc. You will find it easy I am sure. One of the nurses at my Vet practice has a deaf Dalmation and for off lead recall she uses a vibration collar - not a shock collar - purley one that vibrates and she only uses for recall/getting attention from a distance and has had great success with it.

Oh My Goodness, Don't let Ruger hear you say that! LOL Thank You!
Woo hoo! Magnum's turning out to be as handsome (if not more) than Ruger!

Thank you! He will be home July 19th (23 days) and it seems like a lifetime away!
He is so adorable. How many more days till he comes home?

Thank you. He is an adorable little punk! I have actually been reading up on the vibrating collars and will be purchasing one eventually. I m using American Sign Language and I am catching on pretty well. I am teaching all of the basics to Ruger with the sign language and he is learning them quick so that he will be able to help me train Magnum.I am SO damn excited!

Oh man i can just imagine how excited you must be...Im freakin excited for ya lady and I havent even met you! hahahaha!! Do dogs read lips? Im not being funny and I may give this a try tonight with my two but I wonder if I mouth the word SIT without actually uttering a sound if they will do the command just on the shape my mouth makes. Same for DOWN, its such a distinctive shape I wonder if they will do it. I shall try it tonight for sure and let ya know. It may be something that comes in handy if it works. Hmmmm.....

The wait is killing me but I am a bit nervous. This is a first for me (First Great Dane AND First Deaf dog) and this little voice in the back of my head keeps telling me that I may not be the best place for him and I am scared to fail him BUT I am working really hard and researching like crazy and I think I can do it and give him the best life possible and teach him to communicate. Funny you ask that...I have already tried it with Ruger and he did know what I was saying but because he has been taught verbally, I am not sure how that would work with a deaf pup. I have been reading about facial expressions and how important they are to the deaf pup so I have been thinking about what I am going to sign prior to doing it and making sure that the facial expression boosts the sign correctly. Above all, I love him already and he already knows me (I get to visit with him on occasion) and he sleeps with a little blanket I bought for him that Ruger and I slept with a couple of days before I took it to him. I don't think July 19th is ever going to get here!

Thank you! I am not an overly emotional person but that brought tears to my eyes. I really do know that I can do it but because it is new to me, I worry. I take pet ownership very seriously and would never consider getting a pup unless I knew I could give them the absolute best of everything and make them happy well mannered dogs. I am proud of that and the truth is, I have no idea where this little guy might end up if I didn't take him. The bottom line is that he chose me the day I saw him (At 1 week) and regardless of what he can or cannot do, he is mine and I never considered not getting him. Thanks for the pep talk, I obviously needed more than I realized. You are the best.

 We all need a little reassurance now and again, and at a time like this now more than ever. I know exactly what you mean by taking being a fur mom very seriously, I am the same. I feel guilty about my two all the time, I feel guilty for working and having a dog sitter for them instead of me being home. I feel guilty if they only get an hour walk in the evening, I feel guilty if I dont take them somewhere different every weekend, I feel guilty if i dont spend at least an hour with them each night playing, grooming and fussing them every single night. I think with being a loving owner comes guilt naturally, you are never 100% sure you are the best thing ever for them because they cant talk and tell you what you need. But you know what, we are the best for them because I know, in my heart that I couldnt love them anymore if I tried and if they werent with me Lord only knows what lives they would have. Trust me when I say, I KNOW that Magnum and Ruger have a great mom and the guilt is really just another part of love. So come on now, chin up, get reading and studying and BUYING!!! hahahaha.
