Looking at breeders for Presa Canario's

Hey guy's I'm new thought i'd say high, basically i'm gonna say i've owned a Golden retriever, and a English mastiff x from a shelter. I'm pretty big for a guy 6"3 220lbs, and don't fear dog's much. I know this breed requires consistent training, and is in a league of it's own, rottweiler's are first time dog's when you consider a presa. I've talked to a breeder, and wanted to know what to expect. Anyone here own one? I have a male golden retriever, and am looking to get a male presa canario, my dog is neutered, and i may not have the most experience, but am willing to train this dog a lot! I will be dedicated, and keep him and stay consistent with training. I know these guys can have dog aggression problems, as i know that these dog's can be trouble once another dog starts a fight with em. Thanks for reading, hoping someone can help me out.

Welcome!
I don't have a Presa, and Denna is our first full mastiff (EM), so no help there, but... a few questions -

How old is your Golden?
Does he do well socializing? Would you consider him an "alpha" type? i.e. does he like to lead or follow when other dogs are around?
Basically... would your Golden welcome a new puppy in the house?

If I were you I'd try go to some dog shows to see some in person, and find some breeders that you can visit and get up close and personal with a few - and talking to the breeders should give you lots of info, too.

There are some Presa people here - hopefully they'll chime in soon.

i know but a presa canario is way more dominant than a full english mastiff. My golden retriever is dominant at times, but will calm down when he knows the other dog is not messing around with him anymore. What i've been told is these dog's are harder to handle than the rottweiler, or bully breed just checking into see if anyone has had a presa canario and wants to share.

My advice is if you are planning to get a presa from a pup whilst you still have your dog is to get a bitch firstly same sex seem to clash more?
I have had Rottweilers in the past and have been used to dominant dogs what I wasn't prepared for with my presa cross pup was the amount of time that my pup takes up.
I introduced him into my home with my 6 year old springer spaniel who from day1 want a happy bunny . I know he is just a pup but he constantly pesters my spaniel always trying to dominate her and as his mouth gets bigger more of her head disappears into it . She has gave him a sore bite which deterred him for maybe a day but he just wants to play..
What I'm getting at is if your older dog is playfully then maybe all will be well but if he is intolerant of a pup play fighting then you will become very frustrated believe me!! What I am noticing that my spaniel is now becoming more submissive and crabbit..
I am hoping as he gets older that he will chill a bit ..
A must is socialising and always supervising them with children telling all the ground rules of what is acceptable .
My friends little girl has became very scared of my pup just due to his small sharp teeth and chasing her but high pitched squeals set him off. So be very aware if you are getting a pup that they are hard work and that you could be putting your existing pets nose out..
But if you've thought it all through go for it you know you'll love it to bits but with hindsight I think I should have waited to have only the pup to give him my full attention then I wouldn't constantly on his case to leave my spaniel alone lol my pup shows more presa traits than his siblings but like many posts it is how they are brought up in their early years how they will turn out ..
That's my view which is very young as I have only had my pup 8wks so hopefully more owners will advise you
This is a great site for information I wouldn't go elsewhere anymore for opinions ...
Good luck with your research

talk to mark at harijan kennels. this guy has excellent stock and is a very experienced trainer. he can put you on to the right dog, give you straight talk about what a real presa is and what you can expect and look for.

is your golden neutered? how old is it?
My presa will never bother any smaller dog, a sign of good temperment. Older male dogs that still have there balls will act aggressive towards a presa until it is bigger then them. In other words they try to beat the young presa up while they can because they sense the alpha male. However older males 8 9 + and neutered males will be chill with a presa

It is critical that you are in charge of this dog and that it willingly accepts your leadership. Sounds like that wont be a problem but you have to establish dominance early and not by force as the Presa is a smart dog that resents force as an instruction tool. If the Presa does not accept your authority you have an accident waiting to happen unless you simply luck out and have a naturally friendly Presa which can happen but is not a typical breed trait. All these thoughts are my personal experience only with the one litter I have been exposed to so I am sure other folks have different thoughts. I have never had a better dog. Intensely bonded to my family, loyal, protective, calm, alert and attentive. I cancelled my alarm service as it is not needed. My house is secure.

I brought a 6 week male presa puppy into a household with a 3 year neutered male GSD, a neutered female catahould/basenji cross and a neutered female dalmatian. Everything sorted out fine with the new puppy until the GSD realized the Presa was gonna be dominant and replace his status in the pack and started complaining about it. We have had two squabbles both ended with the GSD being bit. As soon as he submitted the Presa let go so it didn't get out of hand. They are a pretty good pack although the GSD will always be resentful the Presa is naturally dominant. The GSD gives a little underhisbreath growl sometimes when they pass each other but the Presa ignores him unless actually attacked.
