Lions Den Southern California experience

I just want to share my experience purchasing a male Fila Brasiliero pup from Lions Den of Southern Californi, ina in hopes of saving someone from making the mistake I made.

I originally deposited 1000 dollars via paypal half of total cost (2000) I was charged a thirty dollar fee for using paypal that I was not aware of beforehand. I was told my when my pup was of suitable age to pick up I would be notified. After months I heard nothing and contacted Julie, the wife of Luis regarding my dog. I was told my dog had died and I would be given another.

By this point I was desperate for a dog and the time period had expired for a chargeback on credit card. So I waited and made arrangements to pick the dog up at a place close to the breeders in this case the parking lot of Denny's. I was told I would receive paperwork which I didn't. I took the pup to a vet and he didn't see anything wrong. The dog is now 18 months and has not shown ojeriza, he is scared of loud noises and new things. He has unilateral hip dyplasia and elbow luxation along with arthritis. His original shot records were in done at a vet's in Mexico.

I believe he came from a puppy mill. I belive these dogs are bred in Mexico and sold here where they can be bought for more money. He moves painfully and his legs appear to be made of rubber. He has slipped hocks and caprals that buckle forward when he stands in certain positions. I would like anyone considering buying a dog from Lions Den to do their homework and be very careful.

So sorry you have to go through this. In addition to the emotional toll it takes on you, it can be a huge financial loss. You are not the first, and I am sure you will not be the last.

Luis, what a shameless piece of excrement you are. When your days are done, I bet you got a first row seat waiting for you downstairs. Shame on you, and anyone who helps you do what you do. Your a disgrace, and don't even deserve to own a dog period much less a Fila. Its sad, pathetic and disgusting.

Well said. I'm so sorry to hear about your struggles. I've been following your thread about your pups health issues. Will be keeping you and your boy in my prayers!

I am heartbroken for you and especially you pup.

I have only owned 2 Filas but for that 6 years, I have read and followed everything Fila that I could find(in English). While there is always great debate about Filas and those that breed them. The one thing that everyone seems to agree with is Lion's Den is a piece of shit kennel. So, many people have been burned by them. There are a few of them on this forum alone. The saddest part is the dogs and the pain they have to endure.

Very important thread to keep alive. This from another thread.

I purchased a Fila Mastiff 11/25/2012 from Luis Yanez of Filas Lionsden.. The breeder told me that the pup had already had his first 2 set of shots and all he needed was his last set. At the time I was told the puppy was only 14 weeks old. 11/27/2012, I took the puppy to the vet to due a complete exam. The vet tells me according to the pup canine he is only 9 weeks old. Also the shot recorded provided by the breeder only shows that the pup has received the parvo shot. I did not know that when I left the breeder because the shot records were in Spanish. Anyways I thought to my self my this is going to be a big dog. 1 week passed everything is good I stayed in contact with the breeder because they had been late in getting me the AKC registration paper worker. At the time we spoke I did mentioned what the Vet told me about the shot record. Finally, after a week in a half the AKC registration paperwork comes in the mail. The pup is doing well and is very playful with my 2 other dogs both are 2 years old. Week 2 Monday morning I walk up stairs to let the pup and my 2 year old English bulldog out of the kennel. I get up stairs and see my old English is ready to go, no problem but I still see the pup sleep. I am thinking this is odd, normally he is up and jumping. I take a closer look I see his not sleeping but dead. I don't move I call the breeder right away. I tell the breeder what has happened. She asked me a series of questions. I answer all and we can't understand why he is dead. She advise me to contact my vet and she will do the same. Now at this point I am sad and also upset and thinking what just happened. I payed $ 1,500.00 just 2 weeks ago from the breeder and now the dog is dead. I later dispose of the puppy.I talk to my vet they have no idea. I contact the breeder to discuss how is it my puppy dies after me only have him for 2 weeks and my 2 years dog are still in perfect health. The breeder gives me the cold shoulder and says when the puppy left us he was in good health there will be no refund or no replacement dog. I tell the breeder your website says your dogs come with a health guarantee. Also on the website it says they dogs live on average for 8-10 years. I told them the dog you sold me died in 2 weeks for no reason and I did my part to insure his health and my vet record will reflect that. Again cold shoulder. What do I do?

The purchase contract states under health Guarantee.

To the Best of my knowledge the above dog is in good health and has no congenital defect and or hip dysplasia. the dog must be take to your veterinarian for a check up within 24 hours of you taking ownership of the above dog. if the vet finds the above dog in poor health, then that vets report stating the health problems must be submitted with this contract in order to arrange for a replacement of the dog, from either its litter or a future litter. The dog can be replaced if any serious illness occurs during the first three(3) months, with the exception of crippling dysplasia with in the first two(2) years of life. No refunds will be returned . Buyer must follow a proper vaccinations schedule. Buyer must notify breeder with in 24 hours if the dog should become ill. Breeder will not be responsible for any vet bills. The dog is guaranteed to be a breedable prospect and have show potential.

Ok, forgive me if I am wrong but what happend to " the dog can be replaced if any serious illness occurs during the first three months. Serious illness. I wonder does DEATH qualify?

Radiologist Report

PELVIS may 27th, 2015: A ventrodorsal view is available for review.

FINDINGS: There is subluxation of the femoral head on the left side of the image. A radiopaque marker was not present to determine laterality. There is an enthesophyte associated with the attachment of the joint capsule on the femoral neck bilaterally. The patella is in a normal position bilaterally.

THORACIC LIMBS may 27th, 2015:6 views are available for review.

FINDINGS: The shoulders are radiographically normal. There is a poorly defined medial coronoid bilaterally and irregularity to the anconeal process with marked remodeling of the proximal radius and cranial aspect of the distal humerus bilaterally. There is bilateral sclerosis of the ulna trochlea and mild remodeling of the medial epicondyle. There is an angular mineral opacity adjacent to the proximal interphalangeal joint of the second digit on the left. A further mineral opacity is superimposed on the proximal phalanx of the fourth digit. There are similar mineral opacities adjacent to the fifth right digit on the lateral projection. There is very mild osteophyte formation on the dorsal aspect of the carpus bilaterally. The carpi and digits are otherwise normal.

Radiologist Report

CONCLUSIONS: There is hip dysplasia on one side, and the presence of an osteophyte associated with joint capsule attachment bilaterally suggests mild osteoarthrosis. The appearance of the elbows bilaterally is consistent with medial coronoid disease, a form of elbow dysplasia. Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia have a genetic component.

There is also mild bilateral carpal osteoarthrosis. The mineral opacities adjacent to the digits could be superimposed dirt, and embedded foreign material or dystrophic mineralization is less likely.
