Public may weigh in on Hutchinson pit bull decision
By The Associated Press
Hutchinson City Council members on Tuesday requested a formal discussion about issues surrounding pit bulls or pit-bull mixes in Hutchinson.
The council’s request was sparked by a July incident in which a pit bull mix attacked an elderly woman and her dog. The woman still is in the hospital, and her grandson has suggested the city consider banning the breed in Hutchinson.
Council member Trish Rose brought up the issue Tuesday, saying she would like to educate herself on pit bulls and pit bull bans before any formal discussion or potential action is taken.
Mayor Bob Bush joined Rose in asking city staff to prepare information on pit bulls and pit bull bans along with statistics on the number of vicious dog calls received by Hutchinson Animal Control.
The council asked for a breakdown showing which breeds of dogs were responsible for bites and attacks reported to animal control so it could better understand whether the issue was breed-specific.
Finally, the council encouraged the public to weigh in on the issue by e-mailing or writing to council members.
Letters can be mailed to Hutchinson City Hall, 125 E. Avenue B. Council members’ e-mail addresses are available at www.hutchgov.com.
