  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

I've got a loaded question... Lol

I use Heartguard and Frontline Plus. I have always treated my dogs for heartworm; I think everyone should. When it comes to flea/tick the decision has always been based on where I live and what the issues are. Where I live now is bad for fleas/ticks so I treat for them as "natural" ways of preventing them has not proven effective. That being said, I do realize that I am giving them something "poisonous" and since Bella is still a pup I only treat at 1/2 dose with the Frontline Plus; if that becomes ineffective as our weather changes I will go to the full dose. I am usually able to take a break from this in the winter months. I do not consider myself a "lazy dog owner looking for an easy fix"; if I felt having I dog was too much effort on my part I wouldn't have one.

I'm not saying anyone on here is lazy, Didn't mean to push buttons if I did.

I was simply responding to your words in your original statement; no buttons pushed :) However, Bella and I both just woke up from a 2 hour nap if that falls into the lazy category

I have always purchased Ivermectin from a local farm and feed store. The 1% solution that a lot use is for cattle and the .08% solution I got this time is for sheep. Its called sheep drench. Both are ivermectin mixed with a steril solution and are given orally to dogs. There is a good thread here about proper dossing for your dog by weight.

I actually just put frontline on the dogs as I found a tick on Daisy this past Sunday. Normally they stay away unless Daisy's hair is too long. Duchess walked around the house trying to sniff her shoulders & Daisy is nose dives into the carpet & trying to rub the frontline off. Dorks.

I'm a naturalist at heart and prefer holistic remedies whenever I can. That said, I use topical flea/tick preventative warm months as I live in New England and spend a large amount of time out in the woods with the dogs. Lyme disease is just too prevalent up here and I've seen dogs crippled with it (I'm also extremely cautious about it for me and my husband as well for the same reason).

I've never had a problem with fleas in almost 15yrs of owning big dogs, it's just never been an issue for me. Ticks are always the problem. I wish I could just get a stand-alone tick preventative.

I had read a great article on Mother Earth News about how a guy had a few chickens roaming free range in his yard and they kept his yard completely tick-free, they were just little tick-killing machines. I had considered that but Nadia would most definitely eat the chickens lol.

I'm not a huge fan of over vaccinating either people or animals. My dogs get the big three (rabies, distemper combo, and bordetella) and I only get the bordetella on the off chance that I might have an emergency and be forced to board them somewhere (and no one around here accepts dogs for boarding with out bordetella vaccination). I'm also not a fan of monthly heartworm preventative though I do use it- I have a hard time justifying to myself that I am dosing my healthy dog with poison to "keep" her healthy (but most of the time if you say you don't want to give your dog HW preventative people look at you like you beat your dog with a club).

I actually know a few people who have chickens. They said the same things. Maybe one day.... I'm going to do the heartworm I think. Ill talk to the vet about flea and tick meds. Ive had flea problems in the past. No tick issues (knock on wood) but due to that I may get the trifexis just because it does both. Well see though. Appointment at 0800 tommorrow.

thanks! I've already dosed them with Advantix II but will look for those collars - they might be a good fit for us during the transitional months.

tjohnson722...My dobie is on Trifexis. I just found out that it is used in Europe (as a off-label drug) to control ticks. It only works for ticks for 2 weeks....but that's pretty awesome.

Im also a naturalist at heart and really truly wanted to give nothing for flea and tick but we went hiking and we were ALL covered in ticks....it was horrible. ...so they're on advantix 2 seems to be working

I've heard great things about using holistic rose geranium oil to repel ticks. Have not used it yet, but plan in it. Thank fully where I live heart worm's do not survive here because of our climate. And fleas I don't really worry about they usually just go through their cycle and go away.

I got 2 of the preventic collars for both dogs. I'm about to call and complain to the city about my neighbors yard. Either that or ill mow it and bill them.
