Is your Cane Corso gassy with smelly BM's?

I've read that Cane Corsi are a gassy breed, but Rocco's gas is enough to make you gag and his poop can smell up the outside when fresh.

He's been to the vet every 3 weeks since I got him and is totally healthy. He also eats the best kibble I could find after research, blue buffalo wilderness large breed puppy.

The vet thought maybe the bad gas was because of the grain free, high protein BB... But you guys know how that is, she'd have me feed him Science Diet!

Appreciate your input!

If I remember correctly the bb wilderness lbp is chicken based correct? That could be it. Some gas is normal but constant room clearing gas isn't.

we had Dozer on Fromm brand food and found it to turn him into a little internal combustion chamber. Switched to Natural Balance and we're going through a lot less Fabreze...

It is in fact chicken based. I couldn't find any other grain free foods for large breed puppies. Any ideas?

Mastiffs don't need puppy food, let alone large breed puppy food. Calcium and phosphorus is important and if you like the wilderness the adult salmon or duck is properly balanced. The salmon does have chicken meal but isn't chicken based like the lbp is. Some mastiffs that have issues with chicken, have issues with all poultry (my girl being one of them) so the duck may not work. Besides the gas is your pup showing any other symptoms of an intolerance? Any itching, hair loss, loose stools, etc?

He does scratch quite often, I attributed it to my chigger infested yard and the fact that my vet said the topical pesticide I put on him doesn't work on chiggers.

He has a loose stool a few times a week but not regularly. Ill take your word for it and try the salmon BB wilderness and see what happens.

Make sure to mix the two together for a bit, especially if gas is an issue now.

The pet store only had the salmon version in little bitty bags which made it absurdly expensive. I went with the "rocky mountain" blue buffalo wilderness which is the grain free blend with bison as the primary ingredient.

You think that is decent dog food? The pet store has there food in order of what they think is worst to best and BB wilderness is literally what they consider their top of the line.

The employees were quite concerned I was buying him adult food though. They said pups need other vitamins and large breed pups need the joint supplements in the large breed food. For what reason do mastiffs not need these things?

Thanks for the help!

Mastiffs are giant breed not large breed. You'll find very few pet store employees know much about feeding giant breed dogs. There's no need for supplementation in healthy mastiff puppies. Puppy foods and large breed puppy foods are in many cases marketing gimmicks. They are nearly identical to the adult foods of the same brand and often more expensive or have you feeding more than is needed. Mastiff pups need to grow slowly and steadily, hence why the calcium is important. I'm assuming you got the Rocky Mountain bison which is fine calcium wise.

So you don't think I should follow he feeding guide on the puppy food?

Rocco has been eating about 4.5-5 cups of food a day. He is 14+ weeks old and weighs about 41 pounds. He is very high energy we go on 3 long walks a day plus lots of fetch. Does he sound like he is doing on to you? i.e not growing too fast? He has been growing about 4 pounds a week lately.

That is a lot of food for a puppy that young. There's different schools of thought about this. Some people feed by calories, some people feed by the puppy food version of their adult foods. I personally always started by the guide on the food I was feeding and adjusted accordingly, a half a cup at a time. If they seemed to be looking too skinny, I upped the food. If they looked a little chunky I cut back. The problem with feeding a lot when they are little is mainly that they are getting more calcium than is recommended. You also want to be careful with too much exercise, as their bones and joints are still growing and more susceptible to injury and issues. As far as whether 4lbs a week is too much, there's no way to really say for sure. Some pups come from fast growing lines, some come from slower growing lines. If the 4lbs a week kept up for months and months then yea I'd say he's probably growing too fast. These guys can gain quickly as puppies but after a certain point the growth tends to slow.
