I have a mange question for all ddb's owners

Just took bishop to the vet this past weekend found out that he is 85 pounds at 8 months which I thought was really good. But I wanted to know about a little patch that is on his back since I got him as a pup. Turns out to be a little patch of MANGE!!! Which I was a kinda of pissed about, because it would have been nice to know this before we got him. But its way too late now and I enjoy and love my boy. So the vet told me to clean it two times a day with IODINE to try to get rid of it. My question to all DDB owners is that, "have any of you guys and gals have had to deal with this with your DDB and will this treatment work and what else can I do about this? Oh yeah the little patch has not grown of spread any where on his body. Anybody's help will be great.

I haven't dealt with it on my ddb, but my min pin has gotten it. I am guess your ddb has demodectic mange? We used alcohol and then iodine on him and have him a bath every week and changed his kennel blankets (to wash them) everyday.
I have also heard that hydrodgen peroxide and borax works. You bath your dog in it once a week. 1 to 2 tablespoons of borax to every 500 CC of 1% hydrogen peroxide.

Titan has never had mange but I've worked with dogs at the shelter who had mange. It is treatable but it takes consistency with the treatment.

Hope it gets better soon! Sending healing vibes...

Demodectic mange is very treatable and may go away at 1 year or more.

All dogs have the mites which are the cause of mange. But the difference is in the dog's immune system. Most dogs live with the mites and never get the itchy dry skin. Others with a compromised immune system will have patches all over their body.

Sulfer based hot spot treatments kill the mites in that region, temporarily. But they also cause the hair to fall out and then grow back.

Did the vet actually do a skin scraping? It is the only way to know for sure - otherwise they are just guessing.

I have never dealt with it but that was kind of a jerk thing to do from the breeder you got Bishop from.. slim chance the breeder didn't notice

Tots agree, mange is treatable and no big deal really, apply recommend treatment and feed your dog a healthy diet to build immune system and keep it strong.

my ddb had it, mind you his immune system was very poor
we did a skin scrapping and it was confirmed

I first tried the home remedies, that have been mentioned
when those didnt work we tried some anti biotics those worked for about a few months
soon after his mange reappeared, I then went to injections (once a week for 8 weeks)

My 6mth old had one spot on the top of her head plus one on her side. We did the skin scrapings and it was confirmed as mange. She has been on a nightly dose of Iveruecitin which seems to have cleared it up. We have another skin scrapping at the end of the month but the hair has just about fully grown back now....thankfully.

To garlicJr What kind of injections did you give your ddb over the eight weeks? Because I thinking that is the next step for me. His mange still has not cleared up and he seems to be smelly all the time even though I give him a bath, two days goes by and he is back to his smelly self, any thoughts on this also?

Revolution or advantage multi, 2x a month for the first month, then the normal once a month will get rid of it and keep it gone. MTG once a day on the spot and the hair will grow back in a few days. Years of mangy dogs when I was an aco. It kills both types of mange.

Mange creates an oily odor. That's probably what your smelling. MTG is the best thing I've ever used.

Thank you jeannag but for us common folk can you explain what is MTG, Iam sure that I can figure out what is revolution and advantage multi, unless you want to explain those also..:) Once again thank you for the advice.

Sorry MTG can be found at any feed livestock store. Tractor supply and such. It stands for mane, tail, groom. It's fine to use on any animal, it's a sulfur, and mineral oil based liquid. You put it on once a day, and the hair growth is dramatic, plus it kills the mites. And keeps their coat amazing. Best part is it costs less than $20 and works. Plus no baths or dipping required.

Ok Thanks for the help, Jeannag could I use MTG without having to use revolution and advantage multi? Or what would you recommend.

Hi y'all, I have a 9 month old Neapolitan Mastiff. I started to see some scabs 2 months ago and her hair was falling on those spots so I took her to the Vet and she scraped her and said she has Demodectic mange, which he said it's not big deal. He told me that there were 2 treatments involved for this:
1- Dips twice a week for 6 months, the only treatment approved by the FDA, or
2- Ivermectin injection, but ORALLY. Through the mouth. He recommended the later. Bella has been 2 months taking 2 cc's of the Ivomec (Ivermectin) every day, and it's the same. Nothing better. The only thing is that the hair is not falling, but she's bumpy and scabby all over, specially on her left cheek :( The doctor gave her now antibs "just in case" he said. She's been taking 3 "Cephalexin" 500 mgm capsules twice a day, for a total of 3 grams and she's the same. What can I do? I stopped her on the ivermectin because she hardly wanted to eat. She took it for 2 months. So, is my vet accurate? What do you recommend? He also gave me a medicated shampoo containing: Chloroxylenol 2% Salicylic Acid 2% and Sodium Thiosulfate (source of soluble sulfur) Is this good? what can I do? I feel bad for my baby.
