  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

I am sure it is common place for giant breed owners..

...But, I am pretty sure, every.single.person. at petsmart stopped us while I was there to rub and pet Bruno and ask me 21 questions about him. All we wanted to do was get him a Kong lol!

On a different note.. he was absolutely terrified of the dogs there!!? He started yelping when any dog (even tiny ones) came near him.
This was strange to me, since I bring him to my moms every day and she has three dogs, all he wants to do from the moment he met them is play and bark and try to get them to play.

Strange place, strange dogs, strange people who insist on touching him, even social loving dogs get over-whelmed. He's normal lol.

New mastiff owner here, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression we weren't supposed to take our pups in public places like pet stores until they had all of their shots?

I wouldn't till I had a good titer, and as such recommend against it yes since you have no way of knowing what the dog 3 hrs ago might have tracked in. On the other hand its one of those personal judgement calls....

I didn't know that.. but then again, the way I was raised with dogs is completely different and I am taking WAY more precautions than my family has in the past (although they have never had any health issues with pets)

I'm really hoping I am not judged here for my decision, though.

It is a balancing act between keeping the puppy safe from disease and fully socializing during your prime time (8-12 weeks). Some people recommend taking a puppy into pet stores if you intend to take them when they are older but to carry them (or place them in a cart). Every area has a different risk level and every owner has a different level that they consider risky.

Not judging you at all. As you said, you hadn't heard that. Most likely you're totally fine, but most just don't take the risk.

Its done.

I don,t suggest it for a couple reasons, one of which is the chance of disease, the other is the lack of predictablitlity when in such places from both the dogs and the humans, pup that young doesn't have even the start of the skills to handle a dog/human who doesn't react favorably.

Chances are he'll be fine, these days most dogs are vaccinated, but do keep in mind that people are reporting an upswing in parvo alot of places. And a little guy like that hasn't the immune system to fight it off yet.

YOUR A TERRIBLE PARENT!!!! Lol, just kidding. We didn't take Gunny out of the house until all of his shots were done because we had an ourbreak of parvo in our area.

Every time we take Gunny anywhere, the first thing anybody says is "look how big his paws are, he's gonna be huge". Yeah, no kidding, we kind of knew he was going to be big when we got him.

I usually take mine out before. You miss almost all your puppy passive socialization time if you wait. I know it will always cause controversy one way or another but a healthy puppy is at less risk than most people think. They do have some antibodies as long as mom was vaccinated properly which is why you need so many in the series, the puppies immune system is so strong it kills the vaccination. No one is sure when moms stop and vaccinations start. To me the Benefits of early socialization outweigh risk in my opinion. Even properly vaccinated puppies CAN get parvo.

That being said I limit floor time in places and generally cary at Petsmart or limit areas of the park.

Well that settles it.. not more going out!! That's scary stuff. :/

That's all I kept hearing, "he's gonna be huge! Look at his paws!"

Lincoln's training class is in the back of a pet store which I find a bit iffy. No idea what all dogs have been back there, plus they put up a little temporary fence in the alley behind the store so they can run around outside. Not sure if that fence is up all of the time and even if it is it's only about 18 inches high.

First time we went we had to wait about 10-15 minutes. I'm sitting there holding a 35lb dog wishing I could put him on the floor.

I took Sadie to Petsmart from the day we brought her home. I just took a blanket and placed it in a cart. She was scared of dogs and this way she was able to observe, or hide in the cart if she felt the need. MOst of the time she had the front paws on the edge of the cart. God forbid if she would miss something.......

I took Denna out as much as possible, as early as possible, but put her in the shopping carts any time I could - it was easier on me and her. Easier for her, because she was taller, and people and other dogs were held more at a distance and not so intimidating.

As for meeting and greeting people and dogs at the pet store - try to stick up for your pup, so he knows you'll protect him, and he doesn't have to worry about a thing. Our Denna is ms. confidence, but even she has her limits. She snapped at an overly obnoxious fluff-ball puppy when he tried to jump all over her. The other puppy's parents didn't even notice... clueless. I pulled Denna back and had her sit and be calm while I kept the other pup at a safe distance.

And, 21 questions from everyone you meet? yep. But, talking about my dog is one of my favorite past-times (as evidenced by my wordy posts in this forum!!). If I'm in a hurry, I'll leave Denna at home or in the car (if it's cool enough out... which isn't as much of a problem here in Seattle).

I carry around a 25lb toddler all day everyday, so Bruno (for the next about.. week) is lighter! Haha!
