How much food will a mastiff eat in a month if it will be roughly 125 pounds

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I already have a boxer/lab mix and we are looking to get him a friend. Right now a friend of our works at a local animal shelter and she has some neapolitan/dogue de bordeaux mixes that are 3 months old that we are seriously considering adopting. However, our only concern with getting one is that we are going to completely underestimate the amount of food the dog will need to eat in a month.

We know the dog will be roughly 125 pounds because the father was a neapolitan mix that was about 135 pounds and the mother was the dogue de bordeaux who was about 110 pounds.

Does anyone have any ideas on how many pounds of food this dog might eat in a month? I know sometimes you have to kind of test to see how much is good for the dog, but at the same time we know they will be eating quite a bit since they are going to be big and growing very quickly over the next few years.

If someone could help us out and answer that would be wonderful!

Thank you ,
Allison

A lot will depend on what you will be feeding and the dogs activity level.

We feed raw and we have found it to be cheaper than the premium kibble and a little more than the cheaper grocery store kibble. However we live in Houston where meat can be found cheaply. Our 110 to125 pound female, moderate activity level, eats around 2 pounds a day costing us roughly 2.50 a day.

I have a 6 month EM whose projected adult weight is 240lbs. He currently gets 6 cups of food a day. Your possible puppy would eat less since their projected weight is about half of his but this might give you an idea.

We will most likely be feeding the dog Science Diet, as that is what it is currently eating and what our other dog eats (so they will eventually be able to eat out of the same bag - in 2 years that is). I know Science Diet can be better than some store bought brands, but isn't the absolute best brand.

What I did is look up the feeding directions on the food that I planned to feed both as a puppy and as an adult and using the expected weight found out how much of that I would need to feed each day.

FYI, many mastiffs have issues with chicken and corn, most of the Hills Science Diets have both, in large quantities, and most of us here don't care for SD at all.

However if that is your prefered food, what does the bag say for a dog between 125 and 135 lbs? It does depend greatly on the type of food, and the dog's activity level though, which can make it very difficult to predict.

Please do some research on Science Diet before feeding it your pup, and before continuing to feed it to your current dogs.
