How long does it last? There is hair everywhere!

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know how long DDB moult for? Murphy started heavily in about March/early April and he's still going strong now almost halfway through May and those little pin-prick hairs are clinging noticeably more to anything that isn't grey! Does it differ from dog to dog?

Also, Murphy finally celebrated his first birthday on the 10th (Sunday gone) of this month, and I forgot to mention it on here. Sorry Murph!

Thanks,

(A very hairy, frustrated) Joe.

Hi eoj89, dogs shed their coat according to the amount of light entering their retina. Usually twice a year, when the days get longer in the spring and when the days get shorter in the early fall. If you keep the dog in the house all year where most people keep the lights on until nine or ten at night, the dog tens to shed all year round with a heaver shed spring and fall. Where the climate is warm or cold all year the dog will adapt and keep more or less coat as needed. Genetics also comes into play. I had a newfy bitch who use to carry a very heavy coat all year long and then drop it all in February. It turns out that her grandmother did the same.

We must do a good job of keeping the lights low around here... Denna hardly sheds at all - so far - knock on wood!
...we still have plenty of hairs around, don't get me wrong! but, the 15lb cat leaves at least 4x as many around as the 150lb dog.

I'd say it was diet related (she's raw fed), but she didn't shed before we switched to raw at 6 months old... so, maybe we just lucked out.
Also not sure if a DDB sheds in a different pattern than an EM?

Happy Belated B-Day, Murphy!

Expect it heavy through the warmer monts. some DDB have a tad shorter coat tend to shed less. I bot Roomba is my Friend LOL. Was well worth the investment, i Have two DDB and a Neo. the hair is minimal now.

Diet does play a roll . I will tell you i see less of a shed with fish based Kibble and if i keep 30% of the diet raw.

I never knew that about the light entering the dog's eyes! Yeah it's quite warm here now for May, and his fur is starting to lighten again being in the sun. If we got a Roomba I'm sure it would last about half an hour max - we were leaving the groomers last time we were there, and he (Murphy) tried to fight with an extension cable on the way out

I guess we'll all be wearing neutral colours until October comes! There is supposed to be a 3 month heatwave coming our way soon too

My girl tends to shed pretty steadily (we are In Australia). I curry-comb her once or twice a week to try keep it under control. But yes, for a short coated dog.... Hair. Hair everywhere.

I use a "rake" on Max almost every day over the last few weeks. It looks alot like a horse brush, metal with little zigzag teeth. The hair just keeps coming. When he shakes, you have to look out for drool slingers and hair clouds!

I guess we're lucky. Our DDB doesn't moult at all, and doesn't ever shed that much. Drool is, of course, a whole different story. However, I could probably knit a new dog every week from the fur off the 8" tall terrier we have.
