How extreme are fila brasileiros?

it is refreshing to read your post!this is how all of my Filas have been and still are!

I see a harder temp in my pups because i have not done the same socializing that i did with their mom and dad but they are in no way lunging maniacs but they do let you know in a hurry whos around when i take them out. Trust me its utter kaos when someone shows up that they have never seen before, their bark is different and there body stance is different and i have a hard time getting them away from the gate, i physically have to touch everyone of them to get their attention to follow me, would i allow them to be loose around a total stranger, NOT A CHANCE! Would i have them on a leash around a total stranger, YES , will they sit and behave YES but dont come into their space or you will get it. I love my dogs and would not put them in a situation that i felt they were not capable of handling, they know im the boss and they trust me and i trust them. When i pick up the car keys or put my shoes on all 5 are pleading with their eyes for me to take them with me, they are so so so happy when they are with me, even if its just going to the corner store, they love it and it gets them used to the outside world and not every person walking by is a threat. At night time , thats a whole other story, when it gets dark they go into a whole other mode. I dont know if i could own another breed after having filas for so long.

I bet you do see a difference,I do in my 9 mos pup Maddie.some is her genetics and some she has not gone as many places. it is just nice to read about other Filas that act the way I was taught 20+yrs ago, that a Fila should. my dogs have always gone everywhere with me,does not mean they have been touched, but they have had the experience with the sights and sounds. I have only had one that did not trust my instincts and/or reactions and it was genetic as her whole litter was the same.having Filas,I have become very good at having a presence when out with my dog(s) that people do not want to get to close.maybe it is my I do not give a damn if you look at my dog stance.
I have found most ask from a distance what they are,I always add that they have enough friends, but thanks.even if it was never mentioned.

my pull to the Filas all those years ago, was their calm and confident disposition, their undying loyalty and the proof that they can and will back up their scary growl thing they do!my friend just finished training school when our Filas were ready to be really trained,so we had a blast and had Filas that were amazingly trained.had them trained with hand signals and all, plus lots of service dog tricks they were just too cool.

but, even with all of that our girls loved to scare the crap out of the unexpecting and over confident!! I had a service guy out once who insisted all dogs LOVE him.he was working at the back of my house and my girls had to pee,so I hooked them on a cable attatched to my front porch and went out back to warn him to not go in the front without telling me first.well, lets just say he was an asshat and went in the front anyway!all I can say is thank the lord he had on cover alls and I was paying attention.the one only got about 10in of material and he was able to get away with a big bruise on his back and an even bigger one to his ego!!from then on,he would beep when he pulled up so I could let him in the gate(my house was in the fenced yard).

now having skin kids also, I love the comfort that my girls will protect them as well as I do.

mountainfila, I would like to have that kind of control and training with my Taurus. I don't want to have to lock him up, as he gets very upset about not being near Mama, and he's a pretty good boy with the couple of strangers he's come across, but I want to have it so that he can sit near me when I do have the rare visitor. Would you mind if I contacted you privately with questions? He's incredibly smart, though a little stubborn in some respects. He absolutely must go outside while we're cooking or eating because he doesn't catch a clue that we do not want his enormous head stuffed into our dishes, and butter may not, under any circumstances, be left unattended for even a moment. He doesn't seem to get the idea that LEAPING upon Mama at 170 mph onto vital organs is not a fun way to wake her, in addition to not getting the idea that the cats absolutely do NOT want to play with him because they are not, in fact, small, pointy-eared dogs with speech impediments. I also cannot seem to convince him that tissue is not, in fact, part of a nutritious breakfast, but he's picking up commands very quickly.

I think my meter reader flips a coin with his work buddies to see who gets to read our meter hahahahaha. We have a camera on the front gate and driveway so we seen him pull up one morning and the three pups were out, i think they were about 5 or 6 months at the time, well they heard him coming and hit that front fence with a vengence, he stood there for a couple seconds with his hand on the gate latch and decided not to come in, smart man lol. He then pulled into our neighbors driveway, got into the back of his truck box and stretched his arm up and pointed his little machine at our meter over the fence and then got in his truck and drove away. The last time he came the dogs were in the house and he got halfway across the yard before the dogs heard him or seen him but as soon as they all barked he froze lol he didnt move for a few seconds, i guess he was waiting for them to come charging out there hahahaha once he realized that they were inside he did his thing and left. After he was gone i let the dogs out , holy sniff fest lol they kept tracking his scent from the gate to the meter and back again and then air scent for a few sconds then back to sniffing the ground were he walked.

We had the jehovahs show up the other day, i seen him coming so i went out with the pups and met him at the gate, the dogs were barking so i told him i wasnt interested and he proceeded to shove a small book through the gate at me, well before i could say no thank you Victory jumped at it and grabbed it from his hand and proceeded to shred it in front of him, he looked mortified, i said good day to him and turned to go back to the house so Victory picked up the shreded book and trotted along side me back to the house with bits of paper flying behind her as she shook the book every few steps, i dont think he will be back hahahahaha

I laughed when I read this...we have lots of jehovahs that come through our neighborhood. On a few occasions they "got me" while I was doing some yard work. No matter how polite I am they don't take the hint. So finally the last time they came through I saw them up the street...I went in the house and got Crickett and tied her up on the front yard. I went inside and watched. Hehe....a woman and a man didn't see her at first, but as soon as they walked on the driveway she let them know they weren't welcome...the look on the faces were priceless....Crickett has an intense expression. Needles to say they don't even ring my doorbell anymore :)

:lolbangtable:

I was going to "borrow" Mooshi next time the Jehovah's came by, maybe I'll "borrow" you and a couple of your boys isntead ;) Apollo's great, but he's also good about understanding that if I open the door to talk to the person then he needs to be polite and let me talk not bark over me. Most of the time thats awesome, with the Jehovah's I was wishing for a harder temp'ed dog lol

Man, I wish I had your talents with these guys. I mean, not only do I have my first Fila, but he's my first dog, period. By all means, esp. mountainfila and fila4me, flood my inbox with advice. My very first post was that I'd made a mistake, having never heard of this breed EVER, even though I'd done years of research, looking for the perfect dog, and stumbled upon him by accident.

I wouldn't trade Taurus for ANYTHING, but I don't know how to choose my battles with him ("Come here Taurus! :D" "Meh. I have to see if this corner stinks. Sorry.") and he IS stubborn. He also picks strange people to be cool around. Like that trainer that I wanted to attack. He was such a good boy, you wouldn't think he was anything other than a growly mutt. (Sometimes I really wonder if he's pure Fila. He looks so...Labby to me sometimes.) He was great when I brought him with me to see my psychiatrist, and he was a dream at the vet's office (until he lunged out the door to the exam room practically screaming "I'M GONNA SEE ALL THE STUFF!!" He was running headlong to the receptionist with his "Gimme Cookies?" expression. They kept plying him with cookies since we'd gotten there. He wouldn't eat them. He prefers ice cubes. But he'd crunch them in half and leave a goopy mess on the floor and seemed delighted. Got another visit on Saturday. He may come to think of it as The Cookie Place.)

I am SO not too proud to say I'm in over my head, and that I have WAY too much dog for a first (or possibly second or third) time owner, but he's my boy, and he's wonderful, adorable, and about perfect for this family. (He came pre-demented. No brainwashing into the Weird necessary.) And I took the responsibility, and WILL do right by him, come hell or high water. So any tips, tricks, commands I should teach and how to do it...please. If something pops into your head that you think, "Hmm. A first-time Fila owner should know this, too," then drop me a line.

In my opinion, every dog should be trained in obedience. As owners, rules need to be enforced right off the bat and the dog should be raised with NILF (nothing in life is free) mentality. If the dog have plans of their own, there should be consequences. As I've read in literature and read on this forum and my own experience with Hector, filas are sensitive and harsh methods of training will not work. They are a sensitive and highly intelligent breed, but if you are not firm with them, they can be quite the pain in the ass.

We always stop in Greenwood :) My family lives closer to Midway then Rock Creek, actually when going to Rock Creek the road on the right right before the first bridge after midway is the start of their land is 125 acres of river front and up to the mountains. The little red and white plane on the air strip in Midway is my step dads. That is funny, we head there a lot and the house right beside the church is actually my dream home, I am not sure why I just LOVE it. We will be heading out that way late August, I will definitely pm you before we go. I so wanna see your pack :D
