  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

housebroken but....

Does anyone else have this 'problem'? My pup is housebroken and he trained fairly easy BUT... he doesnt make a sound when he has to go out... he will go sit by the kitchen door for a mere moment and if you dont see him right away & take him out, he will walk away and just go in the house... any suggestions? At 75 lbs his 'accidents' are a 'big' issue!

Yes. My girl is the same way. Unfortunately, if you don't catch them in the act there's nothing you can say otherwise you could make her think going to the bathroom in general is a bad thing. I know when Sienna is wandering around and not in the same room we try to keep one eye on here. Any signs she might have to go such as sniffing the floor it's right outside and we will wait until she goes. Also, after she eats or has a play session or a nap it's right outside. When she goes pee it's lots of praise and a treat - I keep one in my pocket. If I'm lucky enough to catch her in the act of peeing on the floor it's a firm no, then I move here right outside and tell her to go pee. If I see her at the door I tell her she's a good girl, open the door and tell her to go pee. This is our first mastiff but we have a lot of experience with pups in general and it's pretty much the same with all of them. However, it doesn't matter how perfect or imperfect the system is, puppies are always going to have accidents. The key is to stay firm and consistent.

My last dog was VERY vocal! If you didnt react at the first bark, she just kept it up! Thinking iof training him to ring a bell at the door!

Plus, he's usually right by my side so I can easily tell when he has to go & as soon as I notice I ask 'do you have to go potty? Well lets go outside!' and praise him with 'good boy potty outside!' I usually happens when my husband, who works opposite shift then me, and I am home together... I'll be in the laundry room doing laundry for example and hubby in the living room which is out of view of the front door. Raistlin gets up from a nap, walks to the door, no one notices until we find the puddle (mostly) or the pile on the floor... like I said, thinking of training him to ring a bell at the door!

If he is a quiet one the bells can help but if you have a smart a** like one of my breeders dogs she rings it 2 seconds after she comes in just to get her attention. Then will keep doing it until she lets her back out only to whine at the door to come back in. It is funny to watch but think I would go insane if my girls were doing that to me :)

Ours did the same, so we taught him to come get one of us when he needs to go out if we aren't noticing him. Lots of praise when he goes outside, a firm no and some time outside when he has an accident in the house was what we did.
BTW, dmouse, love the Raistlin name...dragonlance fan?

LOL! You are only the second person to know where the name came from! I get a lot of strange looks when I introduce him & so many think it's Graceland! Spend a good 5 minutes teaching people how to pronounce it! We were torn between Cameron & Raistlin... one big & strong but dumb as a box, the other highly intelligent but weak & frail... Huge Weiss & Hickman fan... especially the Dragon Lance series.

My husband goes by the nickname Khell...so yes, definitely know a lot about Dragonlance. We own almost the entire collection up through the trilogy with Mina.

Hey, fellow Buckeye! (I was in Malvern, just south of Minerva, last week) We trained ours to a bell. Just ring the bell everytime you take him out. Pretty soon he associates the bell with going outside. Keep him on leash, so that it's "business only". No ringing the bell to go play. It has worked out wonderfully at our house.
