Giving Baths to Mastiffs

I love TM tantrums! Does he lay on his back with feet in the air or down low with front legs out barking and growling at you or is it the famous combination of both? hahahaha.

I take Franklin outside, tie him to the deck and use a hose on him. He doesn't like it at the beginning, but by the end of his bath he's drinking the water. It's not the most conventional method to bathe a dog, but it works for us.

:)))) that should be considered violence :))))))) just joking, unorthodox but efective
my pups good with baths, doen't like it but tolerates me washing her. had to get me in the tub and shower me down as well the first time i gave her a bath to get her to co operate

We introduced the tub to Denna early on with treats - when she found out WATER came out of the faucet... no treats needed!
She knows when it's bath time (versus get in, get a drink and get out time)... but she tolerates it. I think because she knows some yummy treats are involved (freeze dried lamb liver) and she also loves the towel massage that comes after. :)

I first tried giving Mateo a bath when he was about 4 months old. Mind you, my bath tub is tiny- barely big enough for a small person, let alone a growing mastiff. But, I figured he was small enough that I could make it work, with the shower attachment and all.

Ummmm...not so much. Like someone else said, it became like a wrestling match between me and a slippery seal, LOL. He wanted out of there---I did manage to grab a soapy foot and then pull his body in for the final rinse, thankfully. However, to this day, as soon as he hears me turn the shower on in the morning, he heads to the back of the apt....still traumatized, probably. ( I think the small tub being walled in on three sides may have been a bit too claustrophobic...)

The happy ending is that I found a great outdoor place with a hose with spray attachment that he absolutely loves to be sprayed with- and bathed with. No fuss; he just stands there like it's no big deal--- and then we play with the water spray after it's over. Win/win. :)

Zeus our DDB 5months old will willing go to the bathroom and help you get him in the bath, loves a shower or a bath he isn't fussed which, then getting dry is all a big game

I just take shadow in the shower with me. Usually he jut sits there until its time to get out, now trying to dry him is a totally different story

Our puppy Nala hates baths, but we are trying to get her used to being bathed (with great treats involved) so we don't have to deal with the wrestling matches in a year when she weighs a 100 more pounds. We also take her in the shower and she doesn't like it either she- just patiently waits to get out. Then challenge number 2 arises wrangle her in a towel to be dried before she slips away!

Bailey is due for her third bath. I can't say she's a fan, but she keeps looking in the tub when we get out. I ask her if she wants a bath, she starts moonwalking to get out of the bathroom. First or her first two baths my husband has got in with her wearing shorts. He holds her down and helps wash the side next to the wall. We use the shower head to rinse her off.
Once she's done, we lift her out, trying to keep control so she doesn't drench the bathroom with the big shake. We cover her squirming body with big bath towels and rub and rub until she's in doggie heaven. The snorting and snuffling is so cute.
The last bath she started shivering, so we put her in bed and covered her up and Dad and her had a snuggle and a sleep.IMG_00000310.jpg

Agnes is indifferent to baths but getting a nonslip matt for the bathtub helped her a lot and I think she's a lot more confident (it wasn't something I thought of originally to get).

I try to get her in the bath at least once a week even just to have water poured on her. I hope she gets used to it so that, when she is big, she won't be a hassle. I live in an apartment so she basically has to have her baths in the tub (we have no option to hose her off outside).

However, she is pretty much the master of the sad, puppy eyes during the whole ordeal and likes to attempt at least one escape prior to shaking off so that the floor is soaked haha!

I have back issues so giving our CC Zoey a bath at home is really not an option.
When she was small we gave her baths in the kitchen sink until she out grew that, she was fairly cooperative.
Then we started taking her to Petco grooming for her Spa dates.
She absolutely loves going for her afternoon at the Spa, and she is like a celebrity when ever she comes in.
Every one there loves her and thinks she is just great.
Now we again have a little one Abby.
We will try the same for her, bath her in the sink and when she gets too big we will take her to Petco Grooming and see how that works out.

There's a "dog wash" in the town I live in. $10 and I can take her in and as long as I can coax her up into the huge tub she is an angel. It's soooo worth it to not have to clean up the mess afterward!

Here she is a little while ago, looking sad and defeated.

Xerxes loves to accompany me in the bathroom when I shower but if it's for him, no friggin way. Puts on the brakes and there is no moving him. I figured out, if I go in ahead, with the door closed and prep the bathroom..... pull shower curtain across, get the shampoo and towels ready etc.... and then wait 10 minutes or so. I can lead him in and just walk him right into the tub before he knows whats happening. Getting one side of him washed (against the wall) is not easy. He's too long to turn and he leans against the wall and will not move. LOL

But he sits and lets me wash and rinse him with a big sad puss look on his face. As soon as I turn off the water, he bolts, soaking wet and runs for the patio door to get the hell out. I usually toss a big bath towel over him as he's bolting, so he looks like a wet ghost.

Willow loves bath time. Sometimes she tries climbing in the shower when I'm in there. Its a bit violating to say the least lol. The faucet drips when the shower is on so she drinks the water during her bath time. She's jumped in with my oldest daughter once, priceless! :D After her bath she knows she has to be toweled off and then she streaks from the bathroom, runs in circles until my fiancee takes her outside to run around with her. Shes a lunatic until she gets to run lol.

Looks like the bath wore every one out!

Cruiser gets baths at our local pet resort. For $35 he gets a spa bath in a jetted tub that he loves, nails clipped, expressed, ears cleaned and lots of brushing! On the rare occasion that I bathe him it is outdoors with the waterhose which is a funny trial in itself. That boy loves the hose more than anything and is usually too busy jumping and drinking water to notice he is soapy. Usually it ends up that we both get a bath, the up side is ...I don't have fleas and smell like oatmeal!

There is no way to get a full grown Mastiff, or St. Bernard, into a claw foot tub! We have a large claw foot tub, some days I can't get over the sides. So, I bought the adaptor for the kitchen sink to hook up the hose. Run the hose out the kitchen door and now you have nice warm water. This is so much better bathe with a dog in. Don't forget the three people to help. One to adjust the water and hold the door closed, one to hold the dog, and one to scrub the dog.

Too funnY! This has been my experience as well, need 2 strong people to lift her 100 lbs into the tub, 4 people would be ideal for bathing!!!. One thing I really wish I would have done when she was still a puppy is put a towel on the bottom of the tub. I think the slippery feeling freaked her out too much. now she won't go near the downstairs washroom if I am ANYWHERE near the tub. She's too smart now to come into the washroom if I am holding a treat in there. We have to pick her up while she's still out in the hallway and she already knows what's going on ;) White knuckle ride until it's over!
