First Real Guarding Signs

Bea, for the first time, showed some real home guarding displays this morning - dogs were in the backyard for a quick run before breakfast and a neighbour was out and about in his yard too. This has happened before and she took no notice of it, but today she went right to the fence giving her newly discovered big girl bark, tail held high, and for a minute or so then just stood there and watched the neighbour. No real aggression, and no fear signs (which she also recently went through), just a strong warning stance that said "I'm here and I see you there and lets keep it that way". The pit, of course, looked at her all like "WTF you doing, that's just Joe" LOL

That is so cool! How old is your girl? Are presas natural home guard dogs without having to do any sort of training or do they need to be trained for that instead? Thanks

Bea just turned 18 weeks and yes Presas are natural guardians, it's controlling and focusing that instinct that can be a bigger challenge than just bringing it out.

esaudio, I have a 7 month old Presa that hasn't had any protection training...yet...but he began to show signs of home guarding a few months ago. From seeing the lights of vehicles using my drive way to turnaround, to ringing of the doorbell...even if a TV upstairs gets turned on...he'll go straight to where the sound is and bark to say 'hey, what's going on? I'm coming to investigate.'...I love it!!

They have quite the bark too, even for her still relatively small size she sure sounds like the real deal :)

Thanks for the info. Mine is 11 weeks old, still no signs of that, which I guess is pretty understandable at this point. I took her to my in laws house to socialize with their dogs and them of course. They have two huge lab dogs. The moment she saw them she squealed as if the world was coming to an end, but 2 minutes later she was playing with them as if she had known them forever. I am trying to get her to see other dogs, people, places so she gets familiar with them. But as it is my first experience with this breed, I love to hear from you guys. You are leading the way for me! :) I have also been training her on down for the last three days. Still there is a lot of work for us to do on this command! Thanks!

Bea, now approaching 6 mos old, is definitely upping her guard mode a few more notches. She is now much more cognizant of noises when inside and not just outside. Any sound out of the ordinary and her head comes up immediately and she'll give one or two of those low, deep barks followed by coming and sitting in front of either myself or my wife. As she's not getting extreme with it at this point, I encourage this limited reaction; she doesn't rush to the door or people when they come in, she just likes to give that warning bark, locate us, and then sit on guard in front of us so to speak.

Each dog is different, with it's own personality. With some it just takes a bit longer (up to a year for some Presas I've been told) for their adult personality traits to come to the fore, and of course also depends on their lineage and the temperament they were bred for.
