Feeding Raw !

Hi Guys just trying to find some solid info about feeding my new tm pup (14 weeks 18kgs )

He is currently on a raw diet , tripe , chicken , wings , eggs etc with some large breed puppy food in case I miss some minerals etc,

Does anyone know how much exactly I should be feeding and any ideas on calcium + phosporous levels ?

He currently has about 700gs of raw meat , with 200-300 grams dried food , and a wing or two , a little natural yogurt ?

Any advice and experience would much appreciated .

Thanks

Luke

So for the sake of estimation we'll assume he'll be a match for dad, 75kg.

For Prey Model Raw the "standard" starting point is 2.5% of the adult weight, with the understanding that that amount gets modified up or down as needed for the individual dog. Many pups end up quite a bit higher than that, especially when going through a growth spurt.

So for 75kg thats a daily intake is 1.875kg.

Of that 80% should be meat, 10% should be bone, and 10% organs (of which not more than half should be liver). So .1875kg of bone (a chicken wing runs 1/3 to 1/2 bone depending on the chicken), .1875kg should be organ, and the rest should be meat, plus extras like the yogurt. This'll get you the ideal levels of calcium/phos.

On that program you can leave out the kibble entirely, though many folks will add in glucosamine/chondroitin supplements (or feed lots of chicken feet), and some fish oil or Omega 3 oil.

GO SLOWLY introducing organs. Liver in particular will often cause diarrhea if you give to much to fast. Start him out with just a tiny bit (and maybe some extra bone to help counteract the diarrhea), slowly increasing it as his tolerance increases. Also go slowly introducing new meat types as many dogs get the runs when first introduced to new meat types too.

And welcome and post pictures of your pup!!! (and expect to get questioned about you and your home, cause TMs aren't for everyone.....)

Ok, I'm back :p

This young, half cup a day or less, cause yah, thats adding calcium (does the container say how much calcium in a serving?). You could instead add a probiotic supplement if that was your thought behind adding the yogurt.

And no, you don't need to add extras if you're following that program. I DO feed Omega 3,6 supplements to my two 3 times a week because they won't eat fish, and most of the meat I feed isn't grass fed, and I give Apollo (my TM) as many chicken feet a day as he'll eat (ok, not literally, cause he'd eat more than I could buy lol, but several anyway) for joint supplements. But even then they're not NEEDED, but they're hard to overdose on too, so I add them cause it makes me feel safer.

I do add occasional doses of coconut oil in teh winter, cause the whole family, humans included, gets dry skin, and my smaller dog can't tolerate larger amounts of fat (which would solve the problem) so I just dose everyone with coconut oil instead.

nope its just natural yogurt, ok so like half a cup :)
I really do appreciate your help , I have not been feeding him enough atm , as I was worried about over feeding him , if he has another pound and a half of meat a day he will be on point i am pretty sure . Does that sound about right 18kgs for 14.5 weeks ?

18kg is just under 40lbs...

Apollo was 32lbs at 13 weeks and 42lbs at 16 weeks, so yah, that sounds about right. Apollo's a comfortable size for a TM, neither huge or small.

Mind, on how much to feed, feed by the pup's condition. Thats harder to manage with a TM, that thick coat makes it hard to see or even feel the ribs, but you want to keep him slim (in a shorter coated dog I tell people you want to be able to see the last rib or two when teh dog is moving), without being skinny. So if he starts to chunk up then you reduce his total food intake a bit. If he's skinny, then you increase it. IN GENERAL, alot of TMs self regulate well, but still keep an eye on his body condition too.

He looks good , not fat but not too skinny I was just worried if I was getting things right .
How much is apollo now and how old is he. He is a good looking dog

Apollo was two in December (so not fully mature, he's still got a TON of filling out to do), and weighed 118lbs in March when he had his yearly physical.

when you switch totally to raw and skip the kibble his total intake may change, and when he hits a growth spurt be prepared feed him ALOT more. Apollo basically doubles his intake when he's hitting a growth spurt. They also tend to chunk up a bit right before a growth spurth, so don't make changes to the amount really suddenly, especailly while he's young

cool , I will gradually increase the meat and lessen the kibble . Are there any kind of ages that growth spurts normally come on , from your experience or does it vary ?
So you'r boy can easily become a very good size when he gets to his physical peak !? :)

I don't know that there's specific ages...other than RIGHT NOW for the next 3-6 months or so lol, but here's Apollo's growth chart if you want an idea: Apollo's growth chart

Apollo's sire is 135-140lbs (29 inches at the shoulder). Apollo's "only" 28 inches at the shoulder, but I'm wondering if he's going to end up a bit bulkier than daddy, he's got a LOT of muscle on him with no "extra" weight (the vet even commented on it, in a good way lol). I still tell people I expect him to be 135, but honestly, I'm not going to be surprised if he ends up bigger.

hahah , I may sound alittle un-educated with the T.M breed , I did a hell of alot of research before getting one and planned it over a year .
Exercise I have been told has to be restricted to around 20 mins walk a day no more right ?

this young, 20-30 minutes sounds good, we broke it up into bits through out the day (and might have gone over that, cause I really wasn't religious about it). 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there. It was usually pretty obvious when he was getting tired (still is lol).

And GOOD on the research, but I'd rather you asked than assume you know....
