Fila 4 me, the thing is that those with those filas that the judge can pet, touch the teeth and fondle their privates also state that their filas are so confident, obedience trained and that they ar such good handlers that their dogs wont hurt the judge because they are such great judges of character and so confident.... at what point do you think that "line" is BS? also do you think there are some Filas that just cant do that no matter what?

BTW, I am under the belief that you can have them tolerate, to a certain extent, people but there has to come a time that you have to question if the dog had any ojeriza to begin with at all.

this is the point! I have never owned or met a Fila that would tolerate that from anyone but family. oh, I do agree their are some that would not tolerate any of the things I have mentioned.

Fila4me thanks for the reply. Filas are very rare in my area; in the 10 years I've lived here I've never seen a fila other than my own, the closest one probably is mountain who lives up north. I will never stop learning, even 10 years from now or 15, you can never have enough knowledge. The more the better. lol i really did think you guys were standing next to each other and having a ball, thanks for clarifying that.
no problem, I didn't really clarify very well. when I met my first 2 back in 1992, there was only a couple in Va and not many other places. luckily, the people who had them let me come and work on getting to know the dogs. I spent 2yrs going to their kennel almost everyday, before I got my 1st from them. I pick up things all the time.

tojvan, lol, yes some judges are pretty hands on with the privates... they want to make sure there are 2 descended nuts and such.

Fila, I have met one.... the lady that owned him actually wanted everyone to pet him, the dog whimpered to get pet by everyone who passed by.... this was at a working dog event. When it was this particular dog's turn to meet the agitator and the obstacle course he did so off leash, tanked through barrels, jumped over water, through balloons and hit the guy like a sack of bricks! He was obviously a trained attack dog and an impressive one at that. We were all in awe at what we just saw, it really was amazing to see. This dog was HUGE! about 180lbs and at least 30" at the shoulder. After she called the dog off it ran to her side where she put the lead back on. I later asked her how much training she put into that dog and she said absolutely none and that "Filas do that out of instinct".... yea, she told me that, lol. I looked at her for about ten seconds waiting for her to laugh and say she was just joking but she didnt say anything. It is my opinon that that dog had ZERO ojeriza, had a ton of prey drive and was trained hard for at least 3-4 years. This dog was owned by a non CAFIB kennel and he obviously not what I would call a Fila but he was an impressive beast to say the least.

I would have liked to see that, bet it was pretty cool. I totally agree with your opinion. my Flower is not hard, she will not let you in my home or in my yard, but when out in public she will go up to the occasional person. only if they do not make eye contact or attempt to pet her first, it takes her a bit. she has gotten harder since her bloat episode in May, kind of hard to put a finger on it. she no longer lets people go past our living room and these were people she has known her whole life. her parents and siblings are not like this at all. but, we love her anyway.

It was actually one of the coolest things I have ever seen and we still talk about it when we get together.

its because the owner of the dog was a very nice person and she was so adamant in saying that dog wasn't trained when it was so obvious that it was... I dont want to say anything bad about her or call her a liar on a public forum. The point was that i saw one and had a good time with it, lol.

My experience is different than "real" fila owners, but according to my paperwork from the pound, my girl is half fila/half oem. She was adopted out as a bloodhound/oem cross. I think it was an accident, at this point, as when I went back with her spay paperwork, they had an obvious pyr listed as a "big white fluffy dog". Back to the story, She loves with the passion of a thousand suns-as long as you belong; she hates with the passion of a thousand suns if you do not belong. These dogs are the most loving, affectionate creatures that I've ever come across. They are A-Mazing. They are smart beyond belief. However, if you do not have the drive to protect them as they would you, it's going to be the wrong breed for you. Like I said, my advice is sketchy as mine is a mix; however, she's got the temperment and, regrettably, too much size.

LMAO - I remember this. He put on a very impressive show didn't he - and I think we all could not stop snickering when she tried to tell us ( people who know better) that the dog was not trained. LOL

Good read. Just trying to learn more about the different mastiff breeds. As an outsider the Fila seems like it would only be good for folks who live on their own and have very little outside interaction. Sounds like just taking a Fila for a walk or having company come over becomes a dangerous situation. Interesting character traits, but not for the faint of heart I take it.
