English Mastiff Puppy Training

I got an English Mastiff puppy at 8 weeks. He is now about 12 weeks and weighs about 45lbs. He is georgeous but I just have a few questions reguarding training. He is in a pen while I am at work, I didnt want to krate bc he is so big. He started using the bathroom in his pen now so I krate him at night and while I am at work. I am not sure what promted this as we havent changed anything or his bathroom schedule. He use to cry to let me know when he had to pee but now only cries when he needs to poop. Not sure what is going on but any suggestions would be appreciated. Also any suggestions to help with his teething, he has plenty of different types of toys but would rather chew up everything else??? He chewed up his bed and now sleeps on a baby blanket bc those beds are expensive and dont wana buy more everytime he chews them up... Thanx for any help.

Hercules is inside he actually stays in the spare bedroom. I have a pen set up in there. Its like an octagon shape, about 4ft from side to side. I use to keep him in there with no problem so he had space for his bed food and toys until he started going to the bathroom in it. I now have a krate set up in the room too. I keep him krated at night and while I am at work and I let him in the pen to eat while I get ready for work and when I get home and sometimes out and about around the house with us. I feel like I cant even let him eat anymore because if I let him in the pen to eat he poops and pees in there. I take him out before and after he eats and somehow he still manages to poop and pee. I am so over cleaning that room...

The pen is too big for him NOT to potty in there. Most (not all) dogs will not potty in a crate, as they don't like to soil their sleeping area. The pen is obvioulsly larger so he can move around more. It's a good idea, that way he can't get into something he shouldn't but he will still have to be watched closely. I would take him to potty immediatley before eating and immediately after feeding. And I mean immediately after eating or drinking. You will have to pay close attention. I am not sure exactly why, but all of my puppies seemed to have to go after eating or drinking too. Once I caught on to that, and took them as they were walking away from their bowl, they caught on to potty training very quickly. Good luck!

Uggghhh!!! I am so frustrated. I got up this morning and what did he do? Peed in his KRATE!!! I am so tired of bathing him and cleaning that room. I dont know what to do anymore. He doesnt eat or drink after 8pm and I take him out around 11pm for the last time at night. I dont get it but I am really getting tired of this.

Does he have bedding in his crate? Sometimes they will get confused and pee on that. Take out all bedding for now. Good luck

He is still a baby.
Some dogs take longer then others. I would have him tethered to you at all times when he is in the house and when you notice him start to sniff get him outside, as he is going say Potty or another word you want him to assimilate with going and praise the snot out of him when he does. Treats, love some play time. Make it the biggest deal in the world. When he goes inside, clean it up but ignore him, no negative reaction, nothing. Mastiffs want to please, by nature. As for nights if there is a partition in your crate, put it in. Make it small enough that he only has room to lay down and turn in a circle. One of the biggest problems is that we buy the giants crates for them to grow into, but they are too big for puppies. It needs to be small, so there is no where for him to go.
But the biggest one is YOU have to pay attention and watch for signs, if he is out of your site and goes potty in the house there is no one to blame but yourself.
As for the chewing, are you in any training classes or anything? Puppy kindergarten? He is teething but could also be plain bored. There are toys that are made to stimulate them while you are out, make them think. I would start working at training and remember he is still a baby, it takes time.

When I got Barkley at 8 weeks old, we were setting our alarms and taking him out every 3 hours. It seems like a major inconvenience to get up at 3 am, but other than being sick, he has never had an accident in the house. Try shortening up the times between potty breaks and don't forget the praising....or as my breeder told me, throw a party.

Ice helped with B's teething, but not gonna lie, he tore up a lot of things when he was little.

If you want him to stop being in his crate down size the crate. There should only be enough room for him to stand up and turn around. Anything bigger than that they will soil in one half and lay in the other half. Problem is quite simple to reasons a dog pees in a crate to much room or to much time spent in the crate with out being let out.

Such kind of problems are common among puppies. All you need to do is give some puppy training. If you do not know puppy training methods then search in the internet for experienced puppy trainer and register with them online. They will give you some effective tips to train your puppy.
