Dog show questions

Not sure this is the right place to post this so feel free to move it if not. I have found a dog show in Arkansas next weekend that has a large number of mastiffs entered so my husband and I would like to attend. Are these events fairly open or do they have a limited number of spectator tickets ? Are non exhibiting dogs generally allowed at shows? Is here anything a newb needs to know about going to a dog show?

Thanks,
dawn

Most are open...I haven't ever seen limitations on spectators for dog shows. ;) watch where you are stepping in case someone missed cleaning up after a dog. Good luck and have fun. Ask lots of questions of the people who have the dogs and are there.

Also always ask before petting a dog just incase they aren't as friendly as they appear or the owners/handlers don't want them pet right then.

I know my local shows only charged for parking. None competing dogs are strictly not permitted.

Ive been to 3 dog shows. One was a small one in an auction barn, and I hardly have any memories. We were actually meeting a breeder of Great Danes there. The other 2 shows were big ones, in the stadium in Houston. They were actually the same show, just 2 different years. It was a busy place, and you could bring your dog if you wanted, but your dog must be well socialized since there are other dogs everywhere. We paid for parking and entry. I will never pay another cent to go to a dog show again. No one seemed interested in talking about their dogs, and we just felt like we were a pain in everyones' #@!. Sorry for the negativity, but this was just 2 weeks ago and Im still a little disinchanted with dog shows.

Unfortunately that can be the case too but can't let it bother you. Just move on and find people that are interested in talking about their dogs. They are there but you are right there are some people who act like you are bothering them or wasting their time and that is a shame. They should want to talk and educate on their breed to someone who is asking.

Caleb,

That show in Houston was one I wanted to go to but I thought it was in November from a breeders web sit I found. I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Since I've never gone to one I'll not have high expectations and we'll just see how it turns out. I have looked at the schedule and know what times and rings the breeds I'm interested in are showing so I'm hoping that if I wait until after their show time they will have a few minutes to chat.

There are 18 mastiffs listed then a separate listing for bull mastiffs I think it was. Does that mean that if it just says mastiff it is an EM? If I remember correctly there were 3 newfs listed as well.

If I actually get to Little Rock next weekend I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Yep, It was 2 weekends ago in the Reliant Center. I went about 930 and knew the Cane Corso were showing in ring 10 at 1045, and unlike the previous show, which was in 2007, they held pretty close to the schedule and ring locations. In 2007, it was all screwed up and we were chasing Mastiffs, Dogues and Neos and we missed all of them because they didnt hold to the schedule. We had pretty high expectations at the time, and figured we were gonna be surrounded by dog people, willing to talk dog....not the case at all! We also didnt have kids at the time and we were a little more mobile and less frustrated. This time we drug our kids with us and it seemed like people were scowling at us. We actually got chewed out for prowling thru the grooming areas with a stroller. Im all about rules and regulations, and I follow policies, but if its worth getting ugly with someone about, I think there needs to be a sign or something...anyway....so I found some mastiff people and asked them if they had seen any Corsos hanging around and they told us to read the schedule and find their ring, and catch them when they were done showing. We did exactlly that, and as soon as they left the ring, the handlers literally ran away with the dogs, and exited the center completely. It was a bummer!

LOL! Another thing...(Im on a role)..My dog is a very "average" Corso, from a very "average" breeder, and I was expecting to see some amazing specimen of Corso at such a big dog show. Ha! Im so glad I have my boy! He's bigger, taller, and moves way better than any of the dogs that were there....one of the better looking ones was even skipping on his back legs, like a displacic dog would????? He even made it to the final round! They were all about the stature of a Lab. I know Corsos are one of the lighter molossers but they are still molossers and should stand out among medium sized dogs. Sorry...Ill quit oozing with negativity, I dont want to ruin this post with it, but I was and still am very disappointed.

Just got back from the Little Rock dog show and had a great time. I found people very friendly and willing to talk. There were a couple of breeders who were very harried while trying to keep their dogs wrangled while waiting to get their turn in the ring. One of them just laughed and answered my questions and asked me to hold the lead on some of her dogs as they rotated in and out of the ring. It was WONDERFUL. Honestly I had started considering Saints and my old friend the Newf but after this outing I'm sold on an English Mastiff. I will be making a trip out to visit the breeder over the next few months and if I like what I see when I get there I may have found the right breeder for me. She has a planned litter that would work perfectly for me timing wise so I'm really hoping I like the environment. :)

Im glad that you had a good experience too. A place where there are that many dog breeds walking around SHOULD BE heaven.

Yeah, I had a stupid grin on my face for two days. :) If I had the room I'd have one of almost all of em. <G>

Yeah, i was really excited. Im sorry that my experience was bad. Ive cooled off quite a bit and probably go back on what Ive said and attend another someday. I would like to attend the "meet the breed" part of the big shows, with some breeds that Im really interested in. I just couldnt adjust to the schedule and see the right dogs. Im sure those venues would be better for chit chat.

Glad you had a great time at the show and met a potential breeder! That is awesome!:)
Caleb, you should hit the Corso Nationals in March. There will be a ton of dogs and the best part is it's in Vegas :D

So you've found a place where you can board the kids, wife and dog at the same place? Great find. ;) I hope you get to some of the game parks while in Africa, they are amazing!!
