Do you use a prong collar?

I've been watching YouTube videos. The Good Dog Trainer and he's a firm believer in the prong collar! What I've watched is amazing!! The transformation of some of the dogs is just crazy to watch!! Anyway just wondered who uses a prong collar for training and when did you start?

I dont use them because they make me nervous. I know I wouldn't want something like that around my neck. With Willow, Ive found the best way to walk her is with a harness. I tried the Nightingale pinch point collar and she just plowed her way on, no respect. With the harness, shes a different girl, better control and listens better. She wears a reflective collar all the time but its just to hold her tags lol. As soon as her harness goes on, she knows its time for a walk and shes a good little listener from that point.

I started using one a couple of months ago. Kryten regressed in his leash manners and his head halter no longer fit.

Yep, I use one and I love it! I'm not familiar with the videos you are referencing, but the effectiveness of the collar is all in the placement on their neck, the fit, and knowing how and when to use it.

Having said that, my goal is not to have the collar be a permanent tool, just until Zeek is reliable 100% on verbal commands. He also walks very well on leash, but there are times when he gets lost in something (a squirrel or a jogger who's too close) and I need him to stop immediately.

We use a prong, not on all the dogs and not all the time. They are a training tool and are not to replace the actual training that should be done with your dog. Used correctly they are an effective training tool but they are not necessary on all dogs and certainly not on young pups who don't know the commands they are supposed to be correct for, there are too many people (this is not aimed at anyone on here) that rely too heavily on training tools and don't honestly train their dogs.

I wouldn't use a prong collar unless you needed it to help you control the dog. You should first try to bond and teach them commands/manners using positive reinforcement before you resort to the prong. As mentioned above, it should not be a permanent thing. Not all dogs do well on it and not all dogs need it.

I use a prong on Sadie sometimes. Mostly if we are walking when it is dark or we are going to a highly populated area, like outdoor malls etc. At night I need more control since she sees the damn bunnies and I do not;) For daytime walks I use a regular flat collar. I started using the prong around the one year mark after I lost my ass to a bunny

I currently use a prong with Boris (21 mths) because -- although he is generally obedient and well behaved on walks -- we still have a couple of problem areas: He gets distracted and wants to chase joggers, bicyclists and FedEx vans. Our goal is to have him back on a flat collar.

Yes I have moved to using a prong on Mystic. She is in her teenage years and has no manners anymore.

love, love , love my prong collars!

I have been using prongs for about 15yrs, I do not start my pups on them until about 6-7 mos of age.I like to wait until they have the basics down pat. I have not had to use them on all of my dogs, but do use them on my Filas. my Pit Bull was more relaxed with a prong, a flat collar did nothing and she was terrified of the sound of the training collar.

This is an interesting subject.
I never had to use anything like this with Zoey, she is a very calm and controlled girl, but Baby Abby is a completely different dog and is very stubborn and willful.
I will keep this in mind as she grows.

Mystic is the first dog I have ever needed to use one with. As she out weighs me by 40 lbs already I could not have a dog dragging me behind her. The first time I used it (after watching videos on how to use properly) she was a completely different dog. I didn't have to correct her at all she would pull and immediately stop w the prong. Poor Abby daddy blames everything on her. lol

I used one on Titan for a little while when he was around 7 or 8 months because I could not control him on a choke collar. The breeder I got Corelina from came by to see him for the 1st time and he lunged and nipped him on the hand and I knew I had to do something!! when I started using it he stopped dragging me around and started listening to me...I haven't had to use it in a very long time. He hated it at first and would throw himself on the ground and flop around like a fish...but once he realized I was the one in control(not him) he settled down and did great!!
