See, Mooshi's comments are exactly why I don't throw anything out... you just MIGHT find a use for stuff... and I have so many ideas I WANT to do... in my "spare" time... I keep hoping to find spare time... but until then, the closets keep filling with yard, fabric, beads (oh yea, I got on that bandwagon, too! LOTS of ideas!!!), and scraps of glass (I do foil and lead cane art glass work... in my "spare" time)...
I love the 6-month rule. We first heard that from Alton Brown on FoodTV... if you don't use an appliance in 6 months... use it or lose it! It does cause us to have waffles at least twice a year, as neither one of us want to lose our waffle makers (we got both a thin one and a belgian version for wedding gifts a few decades ago). I've never tried to apply that to stuff in the closet, though... that would be too painful!!
I don't know if you knit or crochet, but here's a great site to sign up for if you do. raverly.com
Totally agree with the you might find a use for stuff. I can let appliances go in a heartbeat . It's the crafty stuff and tools like chuck mentioned (nuts, bolts, screws, hinges, etc) that are hard to let go
