Do Not Feed your Dog NOW MSM Suppliment

Holy cow! I thought since MSM is a good suppliment for over all bone and muscle development and joint health it wouldn't hurt to sprinkle a little on the dog food this morning. Well my 2 RottenChows did ok but Jade is having a horrible time with Hives. I looked up Now MSM side effects and sure enough many people and dogs got hives. I gave her some Benadryl and am watching her close, might have to take the day off tomorrow to keep an eye on her. I feel so bad putting my poor baby through this, bad judgment on my part.

Will this work?

WOW... I have never seen anything like that before. Poor Jade! But you are doing the right thing, as far as I know; Benadryl is where I would turn as well.

Thank you for posting this as a warning. I have MSM (powder from a different company) that I did use on my dog's food awhile ago, then decided he just didn't need it. Now I use it for myself...

Oh man this is nuts she is going crazy. She destroted her bed thart was under the house. Ripped it to shreds. Now she is pacing and trying to get the other dogs to "fix" her trouble. Laying her head on them or laying on them and me. Crap I feel so bad.

How much Benadryl did you give her & how long ago? And also since you gave it are the hives better or worse?

Edit: sorry NYDDB, didn't see you asked the same question!

Hives got worse then settled down. I gave her 75mg to start then added 25mg more. She is at 100mg and I gave the 75mg at about 5:30/6:00 then the +25 about 8:30. She is doing a little better now, looks like some of the bumps are flattening out a little and the bigger ones are starting to dimple (letting out fluid). I took her outside and had her chase the flirt pole for a few and that really helped her out, more mentally than physically but it helped. I unfolded her crate and I think she will need to sleep in it tonight to prevent her from tearing stuff in her frustrastion tonight.

She is a little better took her up to 125mg this morning but she is still freaking out over the itches. She hurt Dozer last night jumping from couch to couch trying to get away from the irritation. I think he is ok but he was pissed. I had another issue though, when I went to change the dog water it poured out bright blue. I don't add anything to there water so I am wondering if the MSM from there mouths reacted with the metal bucket and turned blue or did someone poison my dogs.
Took a couple pics this morning here https://plus.google.com/u/0/104687566500361731621/posts/hwnYn873QSG

Those are some very severe welts she's got there. I'm not one to get people worked up over "little" things, but if those don't clear up I'd see the vet.
Man, seeing those makes ME itch...

We're doing a Benadryl cycle here as well. I've confirmed my boy has food allergies with the cheap treats I bought last week... His back is covered with welts, but nothing like the size Jade has.

Good luck and hope she clears up quickly!

Yep, I can't stand the thought of this and am calling the vet now. They can give her a steroid or antihistamine shot and make sure she is not in danger.

Ive gone through this a couple times, after you start the benadryl it usually takes 2 to 3 days for it to clear up, it will go away, you need to watch her neck and make sure that doesnt swell up because if it does she could stop breathing....... I just went through this with matilda a few weeks ago, they cleared up completley over the 3rd night on the meds...it was like magic.

We went to the vet and it's the worse case of hives he has ever seen. Leave it to jade to do it right. Her neck is swelled up but her airways are clear so he gave her a steroid shot and said if she isn't better by morning he wants her on Prednisone until it goes away. Some good news is he checked her heart again and says he could not hear the murmur anymore. We stopped at the lake on the way back from the Vet.
