If you were feeding him only raw tripe that is why he was sick. Have you done any raw feeding research? Raw feeding is great but requires the right combination of meat/organ/bone. Sounds like you might need to switch to a quality kibble until you do the proper research.

I agree with cyawaustx. He needs the right amount of meaty bone/organs to prevent diarrhea and give him the right nutrients. Please search the forum for raw diet, there are many posts re: raw diet. Follow the 80% meaty bone, 10% meat, and 10% organ meat. Sounds like he has no meaty bone in his diet and the tripe is organ meat = diarrhea.

Feed either raw or kibble, feeding both can result in confusing the digestive system which = diarrhea.

If want to add something extra to the kibble, do not add tripe.

Please keep us posted.

Right guys we are completley changing his diet now, any ideas what too?

We had a pitbull years ago and used to feed him on raw tripe and the kibble we have now and he was fine, big and bulky, just Zeus wasnt taking to it very well, need ideas on new food for him, dont really want him on 'tinned' foods. All advice welcome and thankyou!

We use Avo Derm red meat and potatoes for our guy. He also gets a raw egg whole each morning and we drizzle olive oil over his kibble. He loves it.

We went 100% raw for Denna when she was 6 months old.

musicdeb - I'm going to have to contradict you on the percentages (just a little)... the "whole prey model" raw is 80% boneless meat / 10% bones / 5% liver / 5% other organ. The [80% boneless + 10% bones] is served mixed together, though, which you could label as "raw meaty bones"... overall, I think we're saying the same thing, just different vocabulary...

I use poultry as our "bone" component, assuming approx. 25% bone. (Chickens are closer to 30%, turkeys closer to 20%)

Our puppy gets about 26 lbs of 'stuff' each week (2% of expected adult weight per day x7):
13+ lbs boneless beef, venison and/or pork
10+ lbs poultry (~2.5 lbs bone and 7.5 lbs meat) mostly turkey, I think Denna has an issue with chicken.
1lb 5oz beef or pork liver
1lb 5oz kidney (or spleen, or pancreas depending on what I can find)
plus 2 raw eggs (per week)

I still feed her twice a day, so it's just over 1.5lbs of 'stuff' for each meal. She would prefer more... but when we tried that, she put on weight and lost her girly figure.

I have some green tripe on order, and it will go toward the boneless beef/pork portion, but probably less than 5 lbs per week. It adds more seasonings than nutrients.

As some other posters mentioned, there are lots of good high quality kibbles out there that you can go with instead - and then you don't have to worry about all these numbers. Being an engineer... I love working with the numbers. :)

You just don't want to mix too much raw with kibble. They digest at different rates and can cause serious GI unrest.

Enjoy your puppy, they sure get big fast!

The red meat and potato formula of avoderm has a very high level of calcium. You don't want over 1.8% in mastiffs under 2, with the preferable level being 1.4-1.6%. That formula of avoderm has 2% calcium. The grain free salmon formula however is fine.

There are tons of different kibbles out there. Would you prefer to buy locally or is ordering online a possibility?

You can order earthborn holistics meadow feast or coastal catch online from mrchewy and the ratios right where you want with a growing mastiff as researched by smart_family. (I'm starting to feel like a spammer for MR. Chewy)

Awesome, I'm sure you and your dogs are glad of that. Not to keep throwing your name out there but gotta give props because I would probably be feeding something more axpensive and off the charts in calcium if it wasnt for you.
