Diarrhea To Constipation

Well since I changed Marleys food she has had bad diarrhea. Last night I started a bland white rice meal for her and maintained it through the day. She likes it alot but seems to now be constipated. Should i continue the bland diet until she produces sturdy healthy poops. I dont wanna trigger the diarrhea again.

Give her a couple days on the bland diet but she needs more than white rice. Mix some boiled hamburger or boiled chicken with it too.

Also, you can't make food switches too fast. Their digestive systems will get upset. What kind of food did you switch from & switch to?

I had no choice on the fast switch. The local store stopped carrying her food and couldnt find it anywhere. Eagle Pack to BB.
Well so much for constipation. This morning at 6 am she has orange diarrhea. Gonna give it one more day before I move to vet and supplements to sturdy the stool.

Mild constipation is fairly normal after a bad bout of diarrhea. Its not so much that the dog is constipated as that they've moved everything out and so it takes time to accumulate more for a normal poop.

Definetly add some meat to that rice, she's gonna need it.

If you live in the USA, Mr Chewy's has Eagle Pack, I can't compare prices for you as I've never priced Eagle Pack, but they offer free shipping on any order over $49, which is pretty easy to hit.

You definitely need to give her a couple days on it to reset her digestive system. How is she acting besides the diarrhea?

Acting completely fine. She drinks she eats perfect. Can get her to bolt around the house with the "zoomies" haha. Acting like her goofy self. But when its time for the bathroom BAMM! projectile and super watery. Hopefully she will solid up soon. Darn food change!

Once she is consistently solid for at least a day preferably two then you can start mixing the kibble in with it and transition back to the kibble

I wouldn't add any medications without consulting a vet but I do add pure pumpkin when diarrhea is a problem.

Well I held off for 22/24 ours I was recommended to let her GI Tract rest but its really hot out and she keeps looking for food so Im giving in. Only 2 hours =/. Hopefully this will go through her alot smoother or off to the vet we will go.

dont do chicken and rice, do the kibble but mix in a little pumpkin and a probiotic, works wonders. alot of eagle pack foods have corn and wheat so its not a bad idea to switch but find something that is within 2% of the protein, fat, and fiber levels that was on the eagle pack, and that had rice as the second or thirs ingredient. DO not let the vet give you a perscription food like i/d or w/d that stuff is awful and will make it harder to transition her to a kibble.

They really shouldn't keep doing the kibble if the dog is having that hard of a time. The chicken and rice gives the digestive system a reset or clean slate, which is what the dog needs. Pumpkin can be tricky because they can have diarrhea if you use too much as well. I'm kind of confused as to how the protein, fat and fiber levels of eagle pack are relevant to anything and how having rice as a second or third ingredient would be helpful? Most quality foods do not have rice in the top five ingredients and one of the criteria for finding a good food is meat/protein in the first ingredient and preferably at least once or twice again in the top couple ingredients.

If you go with a food that is much higher in protein or fat then the previous diet it will very easily upset thier tummies, generally staying within a few percent of the old food makes the transition easier especially when jumping right into another food. also rice is the first or second ingredient in all of eagle packs foods so keeping that the same will help. you generally never want the first one rice but if your doing a cold turkey switch to a food (because the current brand is not available) you want to match it as close as possible so you dont shock thier digestive tract. pumpkin is a much better substitute than rice. when using pure pumpkin i have never seen a dog get diarrhea, that usually only happens when you use a pumkin that has added sugar. and i agree with you 100% about the main ingredients being a protein source on good quality kibble, all of my cats and dogs including fosters are on grain free kibble some are on raw or a combination. The issue i see alot with people giving chicken& rice or beef&rice is its not a balanced diet and generally a 50/50 mix of protein to rice is too much protein for the dogs system way more then in a kibble so again your forcing the dog to adjust to something very different then what thier system was used to. it is alot easier on the dog to switch to a simmilar kibble. and if that is not available and you must do chicken&rice you should always add a powdered probiotic.
