Dermatitis Help - Bullmastiff

Our 11 month old male Bullmastiff suffers from a slew of skin problems, ranging from itching to little red bumps and inflammation. The vet said that there really wasn't much we could do for him outside of Neosporin and cortisone creams, and that these skin issues would just be his thing.

He is on a giant breed puppy food (Holistic Select) for the next month or so, when we will transition him to a grain-free giant breed adult food at 1 year old.

Are there any vitamins, supplements, or nutritional tips that anyone has had success with? Thanks in advance for any help you may offer.

I personally wouldn't wait and would start to transition him over to the grain free now. Mastiffs pups don't have to start on a puppy formula.
Don't really have any recommendations other than that, but I think there are some other people who will chime in.
My boy had allergies up until I switched him to grain free.
Good luck!

AK is 100% correct. This is the first and easiest step. A lot of the time this will be all that is needed. You do need to give it at least 6 weeks to work.

I'd try the food switch first, and add in a serving of good fish oil, too. See how that goes.

We also use Nupro Silver as a supplement, at 1/2 the recommended dosage, it seems to help keep Denna's skin & coat in tip-top shape (along with salmon oil). At 11 months, he's about old enough to not worry about the extra calcium in the Nupro.

Thank you for the recommendations, we will start the transition to the adult food ASAP.

Do you guys recommend any specific brand of grain-free large breed food?

I have had success with Fromms Adult Large Breed Gold and Earthborn Holistics Meadow Feast with my now 7 month old BM.

Dont know if you would ever consider feeding raw, but since I started about a month ago I've noticed a difference in both our CC and BM coats

I would also recommend feeding chicken free in addition to the grain free. Generally, mastiffs are allergic to chicken and grain in kibble.

You can check out dogfoodadvisor.com for kibble ratings and customer feedback. rcnd82 made great suggestions for kibble. Some also feed TOTW which good success.

Been there...done that...with Titan and kibble allergies. His vet subscribed antibiotics, steroids, creams, special shampoos and the whole time it was the kibble. Steroids and antibiotics wreck havoc on a dog's system. :(

He is now 99% improved since being fed raw diet.

What type of heartworm meds are you using?

We were using Revolution, but about 2.5 months ago our vet administered an injection of ivermectin to help treat another ailment, so he has gotten two injections of that. However, we plan on going to Heartguard for his next round of treatment.

I posted a new thread in the 'nutritional' asking if anyone had heard of Oclacitinib before. No feedback as of yet. Apparently these tabs have been FDA approved in the U.S. (unfortunately not in Canada yet 'damn') I'm wondering if this might be of some help to you.
