DDB keeps screaming...

Hey everyone,

I have a 6 1/2 month old Bordeaux. Over the last few weeks, he will be sleeping, then all of a sudden out of nowhere, he will scream. It sounds as is someone was stepping on him, but much longer and louder. Its a horrible sound, one that makes my heart jump cause it sounds like someone is killing him. It happens a few times a day - in my office, in the living room, in the middle of the night (not a nice way to be woken up...).

In the begining, I would run to him to see what was wrong, but nothing ever was. He is usually laying on a dog bed or a thick blanket so I do not think hes uncomfortable. His foot/leg isnt caught in anything, I do not see any bite marks (no fleas, ticks etc). My husband and I just have no idea why he does this. I even thought that he was doing it for attention (since I used to run to him) so I stopped going to him when it happens.

Has anyone ever dealt with this before? I really dont think its anything physically hurting him...

Is he possibly having bad dreams???

Thanks!

Also should mention after he does it, I can call him over ans he walks fine, another reason I do not think its physical...

Hmmm possibly having bad dreams, its odd though that it happens a couple of times a day, maybe a fear stage??

Wow, that sounds strange.
It could be the first time your reaction was sssooo great he needs to repeat, but I would call your vet, just to be sure.

It could be a bad dream.... but I would DEFINITELY get him checked out by the vet first. Dogs are very pain tolerant. Just bc he walks fine doesnt mean there isnt something hurting him inside.

My rat terrier will ocasionally wake up with a yipe as if someone stepped on her, but after that one yipe she'll act perfectly fine and happy. I've never really worried about it as she's quite the drama queen!
Of course, if your pup is normally pretty stoic and it happens more than ocasionally, I would probably get him to the vet.

i couldnt say for sure, but our friend had a great Dane and the same thing started happening last summer and after lots of vet visits and going to the U, he ended up having limes disease.. not to scare you but maybe ur best bet is to bring him in and get him tested.. best of luck with your baby..

Miel did the same thing. She did it a lot when she was 3 to 9 months and then it stopped. I took her to the vet and the vet said she was okay. I got x-rays and spent a bundle. The vet even said I was spending to much, lol! The vet said it could be cramps (They're growing quite a bit). I think it was cramps and doggie dreams.

I have a 10 month old and he has done this several times. It scares you...to say the least. I have spoke with the breeder and had comments on this chat. I have come to the agreement with the vet that it is growing pains. Do not give your baby any MEDS without THE VETS OKAY, BUT MINE TOLD ME TO GIVE HIM ONE (1) BAYER asprin to help with the pain. This seems to help. Now I need help with his loose stool. He gets cannon butt - no food change, I even give him a product called sea cure to help with this. He gets it on and off. I am about at the end of my rope. He has been real good at letting us know when he needs to go outside. But when he get loose like this - he looses it everywhere. Right in the middle of the living room rug 2:00 am in the morning. And no I did hear him get up by the time I got to the living room it was to late.

I agree with Fran! It is most likely growing pains, due to the fact that giant breeds grow extremely fast in their first year. If it is an inside pup, then Lyme disease is unlikely due to the fact that it is carried via ticks.

I also agree with Fran, it's something our breeder talked with us about quite extensively. She sent home a packet of info that talks about it as well.
I can't say Hooch has ever done that, he does muffled barks. :)

Lower your proteins no puppy food. Mastiffs should not be give puppy food after 8 weeks I've been with this breed 25 years. No regular aspirin baby aspirin better.

Till my mastiffs are 1 years old 21 percent proteins. No grains. Pano is very painful and not the time they will limp on one leg and then change.
