Hello All: I have two female English Mastiffs who are going to turn 4 years old in August. At age 2, the fawn one started having eye problems and took her to the local vet. The vet said she either had allergies or someone threw toxic chemicals in her eyes. They had me give her steroid eye drops and to give her Benadryl. After a few more visits, the vet referred me to an Veterinary Ophthalmologist an hour out of town. The specialist said she had corneal dystrophy after examining her eyes with special tools. He also performed blood test to find out what her calcium and cholesterol levels were. They were both within normal levels. Corneal dystrophy is either inherited or can be caused by diet. In my case, it's hereditary. At the end of February, I attended a conference in Austin for a week and I came home. While I was gone, the apricot colored one developed corneal dystrophy. I was so upset because she was not eating or drinking any water. With corneal dystrophy, both Mastiffs stop eating and drinking water then they become lethargic. They also start shaking their heads all the time. Their eyes become freaky looking with white on their corneas. On top of that condition, the apricot colored one is also suffering from severe allergies in her eyes. The specialist prescribed two eye drop medications for them. One of them is for the corneal dystrophy so the ulcers won't flare up in their eyes and I have to administer it to them twice a day it's called tacrolimus. I believe I have to give them this for life. The second eye drops is Neo/poly/dex for the inflammation from the allergies. Does anyone who has mastiffs or have mastiffs that have corneal dystrophy?
