Brewers Yeast

I recently talked to this sweet old lady at a local dog days event who had leonbergers. So we got to talking and she said that she has always given her dogs brewers yeast for flea and tick, and has never had a problem with heart worms. i have done some research on it but i wanted to check here and see if anyone had any more insight to see if its too good to be true before i switch from the frontline and heart worm meds.

I have no idea! I have never heard of that. I have heard of giving some garlic to repell fleas and ticks but have never tried it. Never heard of using Brewer's Yeast for anything. I live in MS and it is always warm hear, so the fear of Heartworms is a risk at all times. I personally would the hesitant of taking any dog off of heartworm preventative. Maybe it's just me but, if it doesn't work, then you could have real problems.
Good Luck! Let us know what you decide and what your experience is with it.

I read up on this a little while ago, for my dog but chose not to because he has a tendency towards digestive issues. The benefits are that Brewers Yeast has a high vitamin B content, is thought to strengthen the canine immune system and to be high in sulphates which makes the dogs unpalatable to fleas. The negatives are that if your dog has a tendency towards digestive issues then they can have quite a powerful allergic reaction. I also read some claims that the antiflea factor is an old wives tale.

I would suggest that if you go for it, use a small amount at first and watch for an allergic response. I have no information about the heartworm situation and would never reccomend anyone to come of the heartworm meds without a lot of consideration.

Hope this is helpful.
