Bloat?

About 1 1/2 months ago we got our female english mastiff spayed. At the time we were doing research into Bloat and the surgery to prevent it (sometimes called "tummy tuck" or stomach stapling). We consulted with our dog trainer and vet and were advised that Bloat is fairly uncommon in OEM's (especially compared to Great Danes, or Boxers, or other of the giant breeds with narrow tummies) and that the risk to the dog from surgery was greater than the benefit it provided, given the low incidence of bloat in English Mastiffs. So we elected to not have her stomach tacked into place surgically.

However, now i'm wondering if we made the right choice. I just saw another member lost their mastiff quite suddenly to bloat, and I was just wanting to know if anyone could tell me just how common it is in OEM's and if I should take Sadie back in for another round of surgery to prevent it. :(

thanks!

My friend inquired about this surgery also; she has a st. bernard and a bloodhound. The vet said he knows just as many dogs that have gotten bloat with the surgery so he didn't advise having it done.

My friend feeds both her dogs 3 small meals a day instead of 1 or 2. The vet said the smaller the meals will help try to avoid bloat. This might be something you could try.

We've lost a couple of dogs in our club.even after they had the bloat surgery.so it's not a fix all so to speak.but it does reduce the chances.I my self wouldn't go through with it unless it's a serious working dog. Ie sport or something like that.
