As in actual bone and not a toy bone? Most if not all of the bones found at the pet store are not the kind of bones you want to be feeding. If you want to give him a bone get one from the grocery store or the butcher.

Get a half rack of beef spare ribs and cut him one loose, just give it to him raw on a towel or sheet and watch the fun. Would ge a good time to train against resource agression too.

How young is too young to give the bones? Our girls are 8 weeks, I'm assuming I should wait another month or two?

Not really just make sure you don't give her bones small enough for her to swallow. Give her a jiat raw beef rib bone to chew one. Make sure to do your food agression training at this time as she will consider this SUPER high value food and possibly growl and nip at you if you try to take if from her. I can't really say how I got Jade over it except I just kept my hand on the bone a minute after I set it down then lifted away I kept soothing her with good words and kept at it. Then let her have it a fwew minutes and gently slid my hand in and removed it again. She protested a few times but after about 10 times she got the idea that I was in charge and could take her food at will.

I wouldn't give a dog a bone with young kids around.
I've seen the nicest dogs become crazy protective over them, you don't want a kid trying to take one out of their mouth just playing around.
You never know for sure.

This thread makes me realise just so strange Gummy Bear is. He's terrified of bones. He runs away and hides from them. No matter what I do, he won't go near them. This is difficult given that he loves to chew right now. My lab loves his bones and is happy to take them all. And I get really good bones, straight from the source. A colleague of mine saves bones from the family farm whenever its time for slaughter. And the elk antler, he was just as afraid of as well. Silly mastiff puppy.
