Any other pictures of 17 week female English mastiff, please

Hello, I purchased Scarlet at they said 6 weeks. I didn't want to as the whole thing was suspicious. But I saw how under fed she was and couldn't leave her with the people. I never saw the parents, So truthfully know nothing. She is 17 weeks which lines up with her two front teeth coming in, she is 42 lbs and gains about 3 lbs a week. My concern is her head, it seems a bit small but I am unsure and hope others might be able to help me. Doesn't matter either way I love her, but if I knew she had another breed in her and what it was it can help with her care. I take her to vet she has had all shots and worming. And of course vet has no idea, was hoping experienced mastiff owners or breeders may recognize her look. Thank you.12132436_10153241210441733_8989947273625632207_o.jpgIMAG1490.jpg

She is adorable, but does not look like a purebred English Mastiff, not even a badly bred purebred. She looks like she is a mix.

I am not sure what other breed may be in there, but it looks almost like a lab x English Mastiff.

Hm... I think something else is in there too. Could you provide more full body pictures?

Very tall and lanky, barks a lot when another dog has her toys, and gets wild streaks where she runs crazy around the house. But she is still a puppy. There are so many dogs I have thought of mixed with mastiff, even a blood hound.

She is a gorgeous puppy but I agree, some sort of mastiff mix with Lab, retriever or something else. Maybe a bull mastiff cross? At that weight, she will definitely be a big girl.

For comparison, here is my male English mastiff last weekend at 17 weeks and two days. Probably about 60 lbs at that point.

Yes, its the face that throws me, her body looks just like a mastiff. I had a female who passed away a few years ago and she is built like her. Its the face and ears that throw me. You could be correct maybe a mastador.

<cough>

Please, do not call her a "mastador." that is a designer breed/cross term.

There is nothing at all wrong with a cross bred dog, but it is still a cross bred dog, not something with a made-up name.

One of my current dogs is also one of the best dogs I have ever owned, and she is an accidental cross breed with a potentially cutesy made-up-breed name but I refuse to use it. She is, basically, a mutt. That is fine. She is no less worthy than a dog with a recognised breed name (and no, "mastador" is not that, it is a silly meaningless term), and probably more worthy than many purebreds.

Be proud of your dog's heritage, Labs, mastiffs, retrievers, and yes even cross or mixed breeds all have the potential to be awesome. Mutts and cross breeds are worthy. Please honor that, rather than falling back on some dumb wanna-be, made-up designer term.

/rant over.

I agree she looks like a mastiff mix. She reminds me of a mastiff lab mix I saw recently. She is very cute! Here is Xena when she was 17 weeks. I'm not sure what she weighed then, but I think at 15 weeks she weighed 40lbs.

Welcome here! She is so cute, and thank you for loving her and welcoming her into your family. She seemed to have been in a bad spot.

She does not appear to be a pure bred, but in a pet that is no issue. You are being so thoughtful to try to figure out the family tree for any hints and tips that might apply to your baby!

If pup is a mastiff lab cross, it's still going to be large, so you'll find lots of great help here.

DNA tests can help you find the truth as to heritage.

p.s. I was told I had adopted a Bulldog, Shih Tzu cross. And I love my little Bull-Shit. (Although he's actually mostly a terrier.)

Denna was around 50lbs at 17 weeks, and gaining about 0.5lb/day (3.5lb/week), so that's not far off from where you are.

I'm going to add a third vote for a golden retriever in the genes somewhere, though.
She is beautiful!

I'd be curious to hear how much of a lab/retriever attitude she has regarding training - is she more independent (sometimes called "stubborn") regarding doing commands, or is she very excited to learn new tricks? Does she like to repeat the same trick over and over and over again, or does she get bored with repetition?

We did all-positive training with Denna, so she loved learning new stuff, but she still gets bored with too much repetition. Our past Dane/Lab/X would repeat things ad infinitum with the same excitement as the first time... treats or no treats.

Yamizuma - you put the whole 'design breed cutsie name game' to shame with that cross!!! ROFL!!!! Love it!!

I have to say def looks to be x bred. What a beauty. I'm sure she is a great addition to your fam. Be happy with your x breed aka mutt. Some my best dogs I've ever owned were mutts. It can be a blessing in disguise, you may find she won't suffer from common ailments that plague purebreds sometimes. The problem is you won't know without owning and knowing the dog as she grows what her temperament might be like.

She is very smart, but is stubborn. I already have her house broke. She gets bursts of energy and runs around like a horse race. She loves people and is friendly towards other dogs, except my 8 week old Mastiff, she and he want to fight all the time. But I assume its just puppy play as they also sleep on top of each other. lol I ordered a DNA kit so I will find out. I just want to be sure of her temperament as well. She def has Mastiff in her, no denying the build. I just want to know what the other is. Thanks for all the answers so far. And I just got the Mastador name off the internet, first I ever heard it. I don't need a name for her, other then my baby :)

Both of your pups are gorgeous!

You probably know this already but don't be in a rush to spay/neuter, with large and giant breeds especially it is really healthier to wait until long bone growth is done.

LOL @ Bull-Shit. :D My littlest dog is awesome and a cross breed, off a farm and a JRT x cattle dog. When people ask I tell them she is a Cattle Jack. She's a mix of terrier and herding dog so she doesn't know whether to herd other things or kill them LOL. (She does both...)
