Hi my dog has been put on steriods for an Allergy 2 tablets a day for first week then 1 tablet for a week the 1 every other day for life.

But he's only had 3 so far and P**sing all the time and waking me up every 2 hours to go out, will he be like this for ever ?

Steroids will cause the dog to pee a lot and drink a lot and feel hungry all the time. It's tough, hang in there. Do you know what caused the allergic reactions that the dog had to be put on steroids?

Did you try the "plain" allergy meds like zyrtec?

I'm not sure the dog or I would survive getting up every 2 hours all night for long...

But... I took prednisone myself for a bad allergic reaction, and it worked. Hopefully you can get the reaction under control and the excessive urination will be manageable after you reduce the dosage for maintenance.

Ok, well I would suggest you call the vet and tell them the dog needs to pee every 2 hours and ask them to advise how to wean off the steroids at a faster schedule. Then I would find another food, grain free, free of chicken and poultry, free of potatoes. Try a lamb or beef with pea. I feed earthborn holistics and then try 1 allergy pill a day. Only do it after she is off steroids with the allergy pills.

Then if you can I'd suggest flushing the ears with diluted chlorohexdine with a turkey baster 1x a week perhaps. You can buy chlorohexidine off of amazon.

Update last night i let him out at 2.30am for a pee so thought he wont want another now for 3 hours ? went to sleep on the sofa woke up 45 minutes later he was peeing all over the carpet i was fuming smacked told him off woke everyone up shouting. But he never did it again after so not sure if it was me smacking him and telling him off that stopped him or he just never wanted a pee again.

Any way will leave him on tablets for now see what happens tonight, but i am going to stop him drinking late that should help.

I get that it's frustrating, but it's not his fault he can't hold his urine. It's pretty unfair to get angry and smack him for it. Maybe it's time to call the vet and tell them that you can't handle the steroid and ask if there's an alternative with fewer side effects.

FWIW, I have two insulin dependent daughters. One of them had to be on Pred and it spiked her glucose levels over 450 and she - as a teenager - had trouble holding her urine because of the high blood sugars coupled with the sheer volume of urine output and urgency.

Yes i know it's not his fault and i do feel bad, but for some reason when someone wakes me up i kick off been like it all my life. The wife is going to stay with him tonight.

Oh, I understand. My girls used to have serious low sugar levels that sometimes caused seizures in the middle of the night - this was before the newer insulins were released. I spent about 15 years with an alarm set for every two hours to do blood checks. Having to clean up pee and vomit in the middle of the night sucks. It's exhausting and frustrating. I had to remind myself that they were exhausted and frustrated too. They're both adults now and I'm finally catching up on all that sleep, lol. Seriously, call the vet and ask if there's any other options. It can't hurt to ask.

The reason i have been sleeping on the sofa for the last 8 years is because my Rottie i had use to have fits i started sleeping by him all night, he was on one sofa and me on teh other :) but i had to have put to sleep at 7 & half years old when he got pneumonia :( And now my Mastiff is on the sofa lol i love animals and feel so bad when i smack him. I also work long hours and all this together is just going to make my emphysema progress faster but i can't change.

But tonight my wife is going to take over but i will still not sleep well because i will be worrying.

What about a belly band with an incontinence pad inside? I had a large boxer boy that was incontinent and it worked very well for him. He had to be washed often and I applied diaper rash medicine, but it kept everything cleaner. They sell them at any pet store and they're easy to make if you're can sew a bit. Just a thought.

Just give him his dinner and water never touched any of them. also i shouted something and noticed he's shaking not sure if it's from me telling him off or he don't feel good ? but not giving him any more tablets that's another £40 the vets have ripped me off for because i bet i wont get any back.

For what it's worth, I don't think the vet ripped you off. The medication is something that would be indicated for what you're describing. The side effects are common for the drug. It is what it is. If you feel the side effects are too severe to continue giving the medication, please consult with the vet on how to taper off the dosage and see if there's an alternative.

It's frustrating alright, but I have never had a dog that pees uncontrollably on steroids. I have had a few dogs on steroids and Hector was on steroids for a long time but he was able to hold his pee and let me know, nothing just peeing without any control. I would suggest you gate the dog off in the kitchen or some place where it is easy to clean or try a diaper - old ppl incontinence kind.

Quick update he's loads better today took him back to the vets last night get checked, said don't give him any more tablets but once he's better in a few days start him on half a tablet a day instead of 2 and keep him like that hopefully that will stop all the itching.
