I love place! it seems to be a very good fit for lots of different issues. That is one of the things I am still working on with Bear. He will go to place but is reluctant sometimes to get all the way on to place. How long did it take you to work up to an hour? Just wondering what is a normal expectation.
I work on it daily with Solo. To me it's more important than teaching a dog a bunch of commands that they can do quickly etc. Most times dogs follow commands but still have a lot of energy and no relaxation whatsoever. Solo got to an hour about a month ago. Sooner or later while in place (if you keep working on it) they will put their head down and fall asleep.
It's also a great way to exercise their mind. It's a mental workout for them which pays huge dividends down the road. Dog's don't always need to have something to do or toys to play with. Place command is work. It's like us as humans who don't take the time to just sit and be quiet doing nothing, even if it's for a few minutes. We are always "needing something to do." That's why so many people are high strung and don't know how to relax.
Just keep working on it daily.
